Show Redmen Squeal: By Tough Kanab STATISTICS Cedar Kanab First Downs 12 12 Yards Rusing 348 219 Yards Passing 100 11 Passes 5-16 17-5 Passes Intercepted by 0 0 Punts 0 0 Fumbles Lost by 1 3 Penalties Against 45 15 Cedar High School Redmen football team pulled a squeaker out of the hat Friday afternoon with an 18 to 12 win over the Kanab Cowboys at Kanb for the third consecutive Region 10 win for the Redmen. In a hard fought contest the Redmen of Coach Hal Norton came out on the long end by virtue vir-tue of some long gains capitalizing capitaliz-ing on a weakness around ends on the part of Kanab. The Cowboys gave no ground whatsoever through the middle of the line and what they got, they took principally through the center of the line. However, the Redmen were able to skirt ends and picked up 100 yards through the air, all in the first half of play, to come out with the victory. vic-tory. Three touchdowns were called back in the game, two for the Redmen and one for the Cowboys Cow-boys of Kanab. Kanab struck first, late in the first period of play with W. Johnson, the Cowboy 203 pound fullback bucking over the middle mid-dle from five yards out for the score. It was not until the second period that the Redmen got back into the contest with Kent Farns-vorth Farns-vorth hitting John Stevenson, an end, on a pass play that was good for fao yarus ana a Ledar High score, tying the game at 6-all. A second score in the quarter quar-ter for the Redmen came on a two-yard plunge by Donnie Roberts Ro-berts for a halftime lead of 12 to 6. Neither team scored in the third period of play, but early in the fourth period the first play from scrimmage for the Redmen Donnie Roberts broke loose off tackle and outraced the Kanab Kan-ab secondary 80 yards for a third Cedar High score and an 18 to 6 lead. In the closing minutes of the game Kanab again got possession posses-sion of the ball and principally on the runniig of Johnson pushed push-ed over another score for a final 18 to 12 victory for the Redmen. In the first half of play the Red-men Red-men were effective through the air hitting five of nine attempts for a total of 100 yards, including includ-ing the G5-yard TD pass from Farnsworth to Stevenson. However, How-ever, Kanab stopped the aerial attack in the second half with the Redmen failing to connect on seven attempts for a final 5-lti total for the entire game. One or the highlights of the game for the Redmen was the defensive and offensive work of Stevenson at end. Others along the line who were instrumental in the victory were tackles Reed Sherratt and James Tullis, David Higbee at center and Farnsworth, D. Roberts and Robert Lee in the backf.Md. In the closing play of the game Robert Lee suffered a broken nose but it was doubtful that he would miss any action in the coming weeks. |
