Show Broncos Defeated InNJCM Region 4 Play-off The College of Southern Utah Broncos were defeated In two successive games for the Region 4 National Junior College cham-pionship cham-pionship at Thatcher, Ariz., by the Easter Arizona Junior College. Col-lege. In the opening game Thursday Thurs-day night of the two out of three series EAJC defeated the Broncos Bron-cos 66 to 56. In the second evening's eve-ning's play the Broncos lost by a score of 56 to 47. Coach Cleo Petty"! squad fell behind In the opening minutes of the first game and was never nev-er able to regain the last ground. After the first 10 minutes of play Eastern Arizona had moved to a 21 to 12 point lead with Roe Smith holding the Broncos In the game with half of the 12 on thee field goals. EAJC was paced during the opening minutes by Lee Pace who tanked fur quick field goals to help his team move out In front. Smith continued his fine scoring scor-ing In the second 10 minutes with seven more points for a total to-tal of 13 for the first half. It turned out to be his total for the game. At halftime EAJC had an eight point spread of 37 to 28. In the third period the two teams play-ed play-ed on a par with EAJC gaining a single point and a total of two point3 during the second half for a 10 point margin, 66 to 56 as tha cmn nunded. In"the second game the Broncos Bron-cos reversed the tables, moving out Into a lead of 16 to 10 after the first 10 minutes. The Broncos Bron-cos also held a six point lead at halftime, 30 to 24, with Eric Clark and Jim Spencer pacing the C S U team. At halftime Clark had nine points with Spen-cer Spen-cer tanking 12. During the second half of play a full court, close press by the Arizonlans held the Broncos to a total of four field goals, one In the final 10 minutes, to move Into a lead and a final victory of 56 to 47. On both nights EAJC outscored the Broncos by a single field goal with foul line pitching making up the rest of the deficit. EAJC hit 18 out of 21 attempts in the first game compared to 10 for 20 for the Broncos. On the second evening of play C S U hit 14 out of 25 with Arizona tanking 20 in 30 attempts. As a result of the play EAJC will enter the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament to be held in Hutchinson, Hutch-inson, Kan., later this month. |
