Show FAVORS BAND ENGAGEMENT County School Board Settles Issues Permission has been granted the Cedar City Hgh School band to participate in activities at the annual convention of Lions International In-ternational to be held at San Francisco on June 25 through 29. Permission was granted at the meeting ol the Iron County board of education Monday. Band director Eugene Helland in presenting the request reported report-ed that the Invitation had been received, and that a cooperative plan of financing had been work-ed work-ed out, under which the Lions, the school and the band students themselves will provide the necessary nec-essary finances for the trip. A delegation of people from Newcastle met with the board at the Monday meeting to request re-quest that the school building in that community, not now in use. be sold to the Newcastle L D S Ward to be used as a church foHlity. Final action was not taken on the matter, but the board members favored such ac- tion and some type of transaction transac-tion will undoubtedly be worked work-ed out Newcastle students are now attending school at Cedar City and the Escalante Vall.y School and will continue to attend these schools so the district has no use for the present school building in Newcastle. The board spent considerable time at the meeting discussing a new state course of study for junior and senior high schools. Principals L. C. Miles and Pratt M. Bethers met with the board to discuss the effects of the new course and changes needed in the Cedar City schools tQ meet the requirements. Considerable time was also spent in studying preliminary plans for the new elementary school building to be erected in the southwest section of Cedar City. L. Robert Gardner, architect, archi-tect, presented the plans for study stu-dy by the board members. A few minor changes were suggested and will be embodied In the plans for the structure. A delegation of custodians from the district met with the board to suggest salary adjustments. adjust-ments. The suggestions were considered but will not be acted upon until work starts on the preparation of the budget for the coming year. A bid submitted by Paul Stokes for $299 for furnishing materials for roof repairs on the Parowan Elementary School building was accepted. The roof on the building build-ing will be repaired but not be replaced, since it is expected that a new elementary building will be provided In the next few years. |
