Show Gold Medal Tourney Honors Won By Parowan Quintet Parowan walked off with first nlae honors in the Gold Medal basketball tournament staged in Cedar City last week. The Par-o..a.i Par-o..a.i cicvv toppled a hustling Minersville quintet and a 26 point output by Heyward Marshall Mar-shall of Minersville to win the championship, 55 to 38. In the opening round of play In the six team tournament Parowan Par-owan defeated one of the two team entrees from Cedar City by a score of 52 to 40 after trailing through the first three quarters of play. In the semi finals Parowan downed Milford by a score of 67 to 4d. Minersville Jumped Into the championship game after defeating defeat-ing the other Cedar City team 40 to 35 in the opening round, then drawing a second round bye. In the consolation division of the tournament Cedar City team No. 1 drew a bye then defeated Cedar City team No. 2 59 to 51 to win 've consolation honors. At t e conclusion of the tournament tour-nament a series Oi medals and awards were presented. Winning the outstanding offensive of-fensive player award was Heyward Hey-ward Marshall of Minersville. Marshall also won gold medals for the tournament high scorer scor-er and for the high points scored in any one game. He hit 26 points-in points-in the championship game, tanked tank-ed 13 in the opener for a a total of 39. Close behind was Roy Benson Ben-son of Parowan, with 38 total points and Ivan Rowley of Mil-ford Mil-ford was second in single game honors with 23 points scored against St. George in the opening open-ing round of play. Top defensive medal went to-John to-John Wood of Parowan. The all-tournament team consisted con-sisted of Roy Benson, Donald Burton and Dennis Lowder of Parowan; Wayne Gillins, Marshall Mar-shall and Cal Eyre of Minersville; Miners-ville; Rowley of Milford; Russell Durfey and Jerry Frame of Cedar No. 1 and Gary Robins, who-played who-played for Cedar team No. 2. Individual medals were also received by members of both the first and second place teams. Winner of the Sportsmanship award was Eric Gardner of Cedar Team No. 2 and Dennis Lowder took honors in a special category cate-gory as the "Hot Shot" of the tourney. |
