Show Volunteer Fire Dept.' Answers Tvo Pre-Christmas Calls Two fires were reported this past week by the Cedar City Volunteer Fire Department. Combined damages would run 1 near the $-"O0mark, according to Ross Glass, fire chief. However, ; In both instances extensive dam- ages were avoided as a result of i actions of children and prompt response cf the fire department. The first fire was reported Wednesday evening. Dec. 20 at 7:30 p. n. and the alarm was answered by Mr. Glass and Orin Green. A call was received from the young daughter of Mrs. Ray Brown on 900 West Street. Mrs. Brown had left for the evening and the daughter was at her grandmother's. The daughter needed something from the home and when she went back she saw smoke coming out of the apartment. apart-ment. She called the fire department depart-ment and Mr. Glass and Mr. Green responded. When they entered the home it was filled with smoke and they traced it to a' closet and a vacuum within the closet. Damage Dam-age was confined to the closet and to personal effects within the closet. Apparently the Browns had had trouble with their oil heater and Mrs. Brown had picked up. the day before, soot scattered from the heater and it had ignited, ignit-ed, starting the fire. The second call was at 1:05 a. m. Christmas morning at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Wendell Brooksby at 3G5 South 100 West. Here again children . were responsible re-sponsible for detecting the fire, Chief Glass reports. The fire started after wrapping paper had been burned in the fireplace. The fire was held to the roof of the home and estimated damages were held to around $300. No water damage was sustained whatsoever, the cheif stated, and the Christmas celebration at the home went off as usual for the Brooksbys. |
