Show FEASIBLE WORK PLAN SOUGHT I Watershed Planning Specialists Study Local Problem J. D. Polifka, watershed planning plan-ning specialist from the Watershed Water-shed Planning Unit, with headquarters head-quarters in Portland, Ore., and a Utah watershed planning party have been in Cedar City most of this week obtaining basic inform in-form t ion regarding the Coal Creek flood control application.! Members of the Utah Water-1 shed Planning party consisted of Fred Rasmussen, party leader; lead-er; Harry K. Woodward, economist; econo-mist; Robert E. Ralllson, hydrau-11c hydrau-11c engineer, and Bob L. Bridges, geologist. This group met with officials of the Soil Conservation Service to abtaln basic, data and to tour the watershed and flood plane for the purpose of preparing a "work outline to determine phy-slcal phy-slcal and economically feasible correction measures," Polifka sta. ted. The group will .now assemble I the data and set up an outline of possibilities of control of the watershed problem. Polifka is assisting In this initial in-itial phase of the program but ths protect, once under way, will be under the direction of Rasmus-sen Rasmus-sen of the state party, it Is un-I un-I derstood. I Tuesday the' group toured the complete watershed area includ- ing the area on the north slopes of Cedar Mountain, through Cedar Ce-dar Canyon to the Cedar Breaks area and as far north as Summit Sum-mit Canyon. Wednesday and Thursday tha group reassembled at the S C S office to discuss feasible plans that could be Justified on the cost-share basis. Tom Evans, SCS area conservationist, conser-vationist, pointed out that many individual projects in the area could be planned but it is necessary nec-essary to Justify any project on the basis of overall benefits and on an economical basis as well. "Under new legislation 100 will be paid by the federal government gov-ernment on construction and in. stallation on flood control projects," pro-jects," it was explained by Le-land Le-land Carlson. However, if any related re-lated benefits are derived, such as for Irrigation purposes or similar sim-ilar non-flood control measures, that portion of the project must be financed by the supporters. Original supporters of the pro-gram pro-gram Include in addition to the Soil Conservation District, the Iron County Water Board and the jCoal Creek Irrigation Comnanles. Additional sponsors on the initial in-itial application for Federal technical tech-nical assistance was given by the Cedar Citv Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, the Southern Utah Live-Bureau Live-Bureau and the Escalante Valley reau and the Eacalante Valley Cattle Assn. |
