Show Two County Men on fill-Church Championship Team J Two southern Utah men played play-ed important parts in the recent- I ly concluded Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints All- ICuurch M-Men basketball tournament tour-nament staged in Salt Lake Ciiy. Boyd Dover, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dover of Cedar City and John Simkns, son of Mr. and Mis. Ray Simkins of Parowan, were both regular members of the North 33rd Ward, which walked off with the tournament championship cham-pionship Friday night. The two Iron County men were regulars with the team and throughout the tournament. In the quest for the title the North 33rd had to win five successive suc-cessive tournament games. In the opening round the club knocked over Boise 15th, then took on South Jordan to advance to the quarterfinals against Utah State University Sixth. They defeated de-feated the USU entry in he quarterfinal quar-terfinal to meet and defeat Brig-ham Brig-ham Young University 16th in the semi-finals. In the finals Friday night they were pitted against Mesa 15th and the North 33rd riofea'ed me Arizona quintet for the title. Both Simkins ond Dover were starters in the final game. Dover left the game in the last quarter on fouls, but both were instrumental instru-mental in the victory in the tournament which is ranked as the culmination of the largest basketball league in the world. Last week's tournament pitted the 32 best teams in the senior M-Men program. Simkins Is a former star for Parowan High School. He was a member of the Sam team that finished third in the State Class B tournament in 1956 and also entered the state classic In 1957. He went on to the University of Utah where he was a member of the U freshman and varsity basketball bas-ketball squads. During winter quarter this year Simkins completed his work for a BS degree from the U of U and is now working in the Salt Lake City area. I Dover was a member of the Cedar High School Redmen team r uring his high school career and also led his squad into the I State Class B turnaments for two succesi-ive years. He also went on to the U of U and played play-ed freshman ball on the highly tauted team that featured Billy McGill. Boyd has completed his bachelor's bache-lor's degree in recreation therapy at the U and will graduate with his Master's degree in social science in June of this year. He Is married and he and his wifc are making their home in the capitol city. |
