Show VFW Auxiliary Announces Annual Cedar City Americanism Essay Contest Winners In an effort to encourage the .youth of America and to stimulate stimu-late their ideals into the truest meaning of patriotism and good citizenship, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsored a national Americanism American-ism Award essay contest, open to .students 16 to 19. In charge of the local contest was Auxiliary Americanism chairman, Mrs. Thelma Melling. The theme was "In Education Rests the Future of America." j Interest Considered The recipients of the awards were chosen not only for their fine essays but for their keen Interest in family, community, national and world affairs,' who displayed a keen sense of responsibility, respon-sibility, truthfulness and loyalty, and ability to present new ideas with sincerity. The contest at the Cedar City I High School was under the supervision su-pervision of Mr. Arliss W. Jenson who, with the English teachers, Judged the essays. The winners are: First, Joanne Ruth Hargrave, senior; Second, Maxine Ann Green, junior and Third, Sharon Iverson, junior. The first prize from the local Auxiliary will be $15, second is $10 and third Is $3. Enter State Contest The essays have been sent to state where one will be chosen and sent on to National competition compe-tition where the award winners will be announced at the 19C5 National Convention of the Ladles La-dles Auxillarry to Veterans of Foreign Wars In Chicago, 111. The prizes there will be $1,250 for first, $500 for second place and $250 for third. All three winners win-ners will also receive a gold medal. The Auxiliary will give a social so-cial Thursday, April 1, to honor these girls and their parents, and to hear their essays. Prizes will he given and lunch served at the home of Mrs. Lois Blood, 371 North 300 West at 7:30. All Auxiliary members are invited to be In attendance to honor these girls.
