Redmen to Battle Morgan Friday in State Semi-final The Cedar High Redmen will be battling Friday afternoon for a pot in the Class B baseball finals when they take on Morgan, Mor-gan, winner of the Region Five championship. The" Redmen won the Region Eight crown Friday when they defeated the Hurricane Tigers 8 to 1 on the local field to make It a clean sweep of four wins and no losses In league action. The battle between Cedar and Morgan is a semi final round of the state playoffs with the winner win-ner to advance to the finals. The game will be played at 1 p. m. on the Cedar City Municipal Muni-cipal Diamond under the direction direc-tion of the Utah High School Activity Ac-tivity Association. Coach Richard Hobbs will be depending on the strong right arm of Fred Esplin to handle the pitching chores in this contest con-test and Esplin is expected to make it tough for the visiting crew. Site of the state finals will not be determined until after the semi-final round of action. Host club will be determined on the basis of travel In the playoff rounds, Hobbs stated. The Redmen tuned up for the state playoffs with the convinc ing win over Hurricane. Both teams went Into the game with records of three wins and no losses with the winner automatically auto-matically taking the Region title. ti-tle. The Redmen wasted no time setting the pattern with the first five men to the plate belting out hits and finishing up the first inning with five runs on seven hits. Brent Averett led off with a single then stole second base. He moved to third on a single by Mike Carr and Averett came on to score on a single by John Blar. Carr scored on a double by L'avld Jenson and Mike Petty drove in two runs with a single. The final tally of the inning was Petty scoring on a single by Glade McArthur. Not until the fourth inning did the Redmen get back Into the scoring column when two runs were scored without the benefit of a hit. In the fifth frame Hurricane threatened with a man on third and one away. An attempted squeeze play failed when Esplin struck out Billy Blake and Wil-son Wil-son attempting to score from third was caugh cold at the plate. In the sixth McArthur got his third hit of the game and came on to score the final run for the Redmen on a sacrifice fly by Black. After shutting out the Tigers for six Innings a single and a I double scored the lone tally for Hurricane in the seventh frame to end the game. Esplin gave up three hits in the game while the Redmen belted belt-ed out 12 hits including doubles by Jensen and Esplin. Leading hitter in the game was McArthur with three for three at the plata. Averett, Esplin and Petty each had two hits in four offical trips. |
