Show Iron County Jeep Patrol Expands Service "Iron County Jeep Patrol in the short time of its existence has banded into the strongest auxiliary law enforcement organization or-ganization ever established in Cedar City," so stated Sheriff Otto Fife. The 20 men have undertaken the job of assistance to the Sheriff's office with vigor, he reported and are now capable to function in any emergency that may arise. At the present time the Jeep Patrol has available nine four-wheel four-wheel vehicles and one airplane air-plane to assist them in their principal mission of search and rescue. In nddition, 15 of the 20 members mem-bers have completed an extensive exten-sive 20 hour survival course and gun safety course that was given by the State Fish and Came Department. Each of the vehicles and all of the personal equipment that is now in se by the unit, is owned by the individuals. Nevertheless, Ne-vertheless, the equipment, such as jeeps, panel trucks and four wheel pickups, have been marked in the familiar blue and white colors of the Iron County unit and each of the men has acquired identical gear to properly pro-perly identify himself. Each has been properly deputized de-putized to assist in the work of the sheriff's department and it is anticipated that in the not too distant future, each member mem-ber will have acquired equipment equip-ment for the Jeep Patrol valued at roughly $3000 each. The unit, in its organizational period, is not slowing down, officers report. A recent campaign cam-paign for funds brought a total of $1800 into the unit and this entire amount will be used to supply additional equipment. One of the most' important pieces piec-es of equipment contemplated for addition to the unit is two-way two-way radio units. A boat and motor was offered as a prize for the fund raising project and the lucky winner of the sporting unit was Alton Ford of Kanarraville. Winner was announced at the boat races at Navajo Lake on July 24. In connection with this fund raising event Stan Davis waj recognized re-cognized by the unit with the presentation of a fire extinguisher exting-uisher for his personal unit, for his solicitation of $775 toward the fund project. The unit has been called on several occasions by the Seriffs office. They have participated in a search for a lost plane, played an important part in the search for two escaped prisoners from the Cedar City Jail and also al-so aided with the guarding of the microwave relay station near the Iron Mines. . They have also assisted with parking at some public functions func-tions such as the Rodeo in Cedar Canyon and at the boat races at v..ijj They S!c""sct to assist in the patroling of the highway on Labor Day for the annual Pony Express Races from Cedar City to Parowan. Heading the organization as Chief is Charles Cooley. Other officers include Adrian Baldwin, Stan Davis, lieutenants and Clarence Kirkham and Willard Hamilton as sergeants. |
