The first step was accomplished accomplish-ed when Stanford Uunlverslty's Dr. Douglas Campbell and his assistants, aided by a Ford Foundation Foun-dation Grant, worked out educational educa-tional specifications to fit the trict. The second step occurred when foresighted citizens saw the need for financial bonding and approved a $2,00(1,000 bonding bond-ing program. Members of the building planning committee and the school board have since concerned themselves with the working out of a physical school plant which would serve adequately ade-quately for years to come the needs of high school students of this area. A great deal of oiiginal thinking think-ing lies behind the architects' (Girdr.cr snd Rusmussen ) "Inn ning of this building. And yet the building contains much that is conventional. For example the above sketch reveals that the design of the buiM'ng itself is rectangular, allowing for maximum maxi-mum efficiency of space utilization. utiliza-tion. The grouping of the various vari-ous departments within the building makes possible a great deal of flexibility in the teaching teach-ing program. Teachers, as individuals indi-viduals and as teams, can effectively ef-fectively supervise the studies of large and small groups of fA- ' - klnkt., .41. ... ...&...J field of activities. It will be noted that the auditorium, au-ditorium, which will accomodate almost 1,000 students, is centrally central-ly located and yet readily accessible ac-cessible to the public. The an-ditorium an-ditorium itself is designed for multiple use in order to avoid .the once-a week treatment to which auditoriums are so frequently fre-quently subjected. Hallways adjacent ad-jacent to the auditorium are ramped down so that the instrumental instru-mental music department and the shop are on the same level u - v. . : u possible to transport instru ments and props easily the short distance required. The various departments are so designed that different activities acti-vities within each can be efficiently effi-ciently served from a department depart-ment "core". Areas for Independent Indepen-dent study and library services are also attractively arranged. Even the administrative offices have been "balanced," with the principal's offices located conveniently con-veniently near those of student leaders. of the departments as integral study areas makes it possible, should the need arise, to expand outwardly as it becoTnes necessary. neces-sary. The physical education plant was designed to accomodate a complete athletic program from which all high school boys and girls might profit. The space necessary for the conduct of this type of program makes it possible to install bleacher seats which will bcconiodate 3,000 spectators, an advantage which Can uc ciijujrtru ty vaiiuus scheduling sched-uling groups. The proposed building has already al-ready excited the imaginations of many educators in Utah, and we predict that upon its completion, comple-tion, the Cedar City High School will be one of the finest structures struc-tures of its kind in the United States and will receive national recognition In leading education-publications. education-publications. Truly, "the real challenge is, as stated by Superintendent of Shcools Ianthus Wright, to build the kind of educational program that win De worthy of the edi-fice edi-fice that is to house It. |
