Show MINIMUM WAGE: The House this week passed a . bill to increase the minimum wage from 73 cents to $1. President Presi-dent Eisenhower had asked for an increase to 00 cents. - The rrcshlent based his re- quest on the desire of the Administration Admin-istration to extend the coverage of Social Security. It is felt that if the minimum wage figure is too high it will be difficult to extend the benefits of the bill to other employed groups. He had the sipport of the Bureau of the Budget on his request, and the moderation that has characterized character-ized his administration so far has gone a long way towards halting halt-ing the inflationary spiral and at the same time raising the standard of living. The minimum wage law affects af-fects only those employed in interstate in-terstate commerce, and has no direct effect upon most of Utah's industry. A heavy segment of the opposition to the 51 figure came from the South. Southerners argued ar-gued that a $1 figure would Injure In-jure farmers and small businessmen. |
