Show - -------------- - - - - Pony League All-stars Turn in Good Performances at Regional Tourney Have you ever tried to play three baseball games in one day? And then under the rules of the rigid pitching regulations of Pony League Tournament play? Even if you haven't you can still imagine the task that was laid before the Cedar City Pony League All-stars when they attempted attempt-ed the three game series Tuesday in the Regional Tournament Tourna-ment at Provo. They started off with a bang. Erick Gardner opened up the first game of the day at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning after af-ter a one win one loss two-game go Monday, pitching the Cedar City Jads to a one hit 10 to 0 shutout over Price All-stars. In the afternoon performance the Pony Leaguers, under the direction of Geo Petty and Rex Erickson, battled Provo, who had defeated them Monday, to a 3 to 0 victory. Gary Anderson, outstanding out-standing chucker for the local all-stars, again allowed only one hit and struck out 15 men of the 21 putouts to place himself as probably the outstanding pitcher of the whole tournament. However, when evening came and the boys were cajled upon for their third game of the day they lacked the punch and dropped drop-ped the game to the powerful Provo club, 8 to 4, to gain second place in the tournament. Provo, the winner of the tourney, will represent the district at a Sectional Sec-tional tournament in San Bernardino, Ber-nardino, Calif., next week. In the opening battle of the two-day double-elimination tournament tour-nament the Cedar City crew fell before Provo 5 to 6, although out-hitting out-hitting the northern rivals 8 to 5. Scattered hits and walks seemed to be the determining factor in this opener. In the bottom half of the final inning with one man away with the tying run on third. Anderson on an attempted steal of home, was blocked in a very close play for the second out. Carl Palmer was at bat and he grounded out for the third out giving the victory to Provo. In the nightcap Monday the Cedar All-stars bounced back against a Wyoming entry and Phil Yergensen, on the mound, led them to a 10 to 1 victory. Yergensen allowed only two hits. In the opening game Neil Gentry Gen-try led off on the mound for Cedar Ce-dar and was replaced by Larry Smith in the third. He relinquished relinquish-ed the mound in the sixth to Gary Anderson. In the championship game Tuesday night before a capacity crowd three more Cedar men worked on the mound in the gruelling schedule that left the boys exhausted. Charles Cox, lead pitcher for the first 2 innings, was replaced by Gentry for 1-3 of the third and little Roger Higbee, throwing with all the stuff he could, finished out the game. Cox was Josing pitcher. In the championship game Cedar Ce-dar led off with four runs in the first inning but lack of bunched bunch-ed hits stiffjed any other scoring chances. Provo broke into a lead in the third and the tiring Cedar nine could not regain the advantage. |
