Show Special Edition Forthcoming On Pioneer Trek Morgan Rollo, publisher of the Iron County Record, announced this week that The Record, will publish an edition commemorating commemorat-ing the 75th anniversary of The San Juan Mission. The San Juan Mission is commonly referred to as the Trek through the Hole-in-the-Rock. This was the first attempt at-tempt by the pioneers of the L D S Church to establish a permanent per-manent settlement in eastern Utah after the failure of the Elk Mountain Mission in 1855. In 1879 a number of families were called from Cedar City and Parowan to locate a settlement in Southeastern Utah on the San Juan River. In an attempt to find a shorter route to their destination, destina-tion, this group of pioneer settlers' set-tlers' experienced more hardships than any other colony known in the history of the Church, who had founded settlements in the Rocky Mountains. Their crossing of the Colorado River is one of the greatest feats by the pioneers of all United States. After suffering suffer-ing untold hardships they located locat-ed a colony known as Bluff City on the San Juan River in southeastern south-eastern Utah. This edition will ajso cover the present day activities of Utah's five most southernmost counties, namely, Iron, Washington, Washing-ton, Kane, Garfield and San Juan. |
