Not only was the total amount the same as last year, but the levy for each department was also the same. Four departments receive the nortion of the tax monies raised, with 19.03 mills levied for those departments. Two of them, streets and sidewalks, and public safety, each have a levy of 5.0 mills, while the bond interest inter-est and sinking fund levy Is 5.03 mills'. The contingent fund, generally gen-erally referred to as the "general" fund' has a levy of 4.0 mills. Maintenance of streets and sidewalks throughout the city is a major responsibility of the city and it l.i natural that one of the highest levies should be needed for this purpose. FuWic safety, which includes besides police protection, fire protection and health services, etc., also is an expensive operation and requires a hi eh levy. With payments on bonded in- i t debtedness of the citv nearlng an end it should be possible to make a reduction in the levy for bond interest and sinking fund next year, according to Mayor Arnold Anderson. Maintenance of narks and puh-lie puh-lie property, which Includes the cemeterv, requires n lew of 20 mills, while a 1.7 mill levy is sot up for the public lihrarv, and 1.5 mills for the airport, and .05 of a mill for maintenance of the city hall. A sewer svstem lew of .72 of a mill is Included, as Is a .5 m'.U for recreation, and a .2 of a mill for a guarantee fund in connection connec-tion with special improvement district payments. |
