Show C. of C. Presents New Baseball Field to the City A major step In the development develop-ment of recreational facilities for the benefit of the youth of Cedar City, was realized this week when the Construction of bleachers at the local baseball field was completed com-pleted by the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce and presented to the city for use in Its recreation program. The new field, an important part of Cedar City's new recreation recrea-tion park located East of the city, has been completed as a result of cooperation by individuals, civic organizations and the city, and Is one of the finest in this part of the state. Williard Lunt, head of the city recreation committee, and his associates as-sociates have long dreamed of just such a development as is now underway at the new park area, and have worked diligently to get the program underway. The first major step was taken nearly eight years ago, when R. V. Bulloch gave seven acres of valuable land to the city with the understanding that it would be used for no other purpose than to provide recreation facilities for the young people of the community. commun-ity. The gift was made before the opening of the war and was accepted ac-cepted by Mayor H. H. Lunt. Plans for the development of the park were started Immediately but no development was undertaken under-taken during the war years. Development plans were revived re-vived at the close of the war, and the Lions Club undertook the first project, creating a new lighted softball field that has been used by hundreds of people throughout the past two summers. sum-mers. The club cleared nnd leveled level-ed a portion of the park area, Installed In-stalled field lights and built bleachers for spectators. Following this the Chamber of Commerce took the Initiative in providing a baseball field, with the city parks departments cooperating co-operating wholeheartedly. The city provided funds for clearing and leveling of the diamond, and the Chamber of Commerce, starting start-ing with funds accumulated during dur-ing the war years for recreational purposes, and adding more as they were needed, built the backstop back-stop and bleachers at the new field, so that a large crowd could be accommodated in comfort for the games that will be played there. The bleachers Mere built at a cost of approximately $2000 and several hundred dollars were needed to level the field. Other projects In the park development de-velopment that will be undertaken under-taken by other civic groups include in-clude the development of playground play-ground and picnic areas, and the planting of shrubs, trees and grass, that will make the park a beautiful haven for those who seek relaxation. |
