YOU TELL ME: The letter frcrn Los Angeles was most welcome, and It's nomination for one of "our best" will be reserved reserv-ed for a broadcast in the near future. fu-ture. Your letters and suggestions are always welcome. RADIO: The spcrtcast from Compton was an example of public service radio at It's best. Whether you .realize it or not it means that something new in radio was born in Cedar City. The listeners sponsored those excellent ex-cellent broadcasts. Eddie Peterson "played one of the hardest games of his career" in announcing play by play the exciting moments of the series. It is always pleasing to see the public and a radio station cooperate to serve the interests of those who listen. MOTION PICTURES: "Gone With the Wind" has been playing to packed houses. It is a great picture that passes the test of being seen time and again. I t there at 7:35 Monday night and had to sit on the stairs in the balcony. bal-cony. Tuesday night at 7:00 the waiting line stretched frcm the "Cedar" to the corner. It Is informative to see the feudalism feud-alism stages of America brought to life on the screen. It also, challenges chal-lenges your thinking on war and peace. I can't help but remember the lines of Ashley Wilkes: "The trouble with wars Is that they don't settle anything and once they're over everyone fcfrgets what they were about." (Any parallel with our present situation?) "Gone with the Wind" presents the war profiteers of the day. I wonder if they are any worse than our "Garsons" and "Meyers" ct al? Too many veterans haven't come home to much more than many southerners did. Our national housing problem is a na-j tlonal disgrace. Those of you who see "Gone with the Wind" won't readily forget the; scene of the wounded stretched out , in the Atlanta Railroad termlna1 I wonder how Hiroshima compared with It after the atomic bomb fell? And if we think "it can't happen here", we should remember the lesson les-son of "Gone With the Wind". "Tue South didn't believe it could hap pen to them either." RECORDS: In honor of St. Patrick's Day and those in southern Utah who cherish the green, featured as the best records rec-ords of the week Is an album of beautiful Irish songs sung by lovely Eileen Parrel Do you remember: "The Kerry Singers". "Believe Me if all those Endearing Young Charms" "Come Back to Erin", "Danny Boy", and "Klllarney"? These songs from colorful Ireland will bring you lasting last-ing listening enjoyment. MAGAZINES: Some people are doing "a let of serious thinking about the grave problems that are facing the world. Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborne Is one of these outstanding thinkers. Read his article in the March Issue of the Atlantic Magazine. He says In part: "Ever since expulsion from Edrn, man has lived by this ruthless ruth-less pattern of land use: Cut, burn, plant, destroy, move on. But the planet Is no longer big enough for this kind of plunder. With a world , population of more than two billion ! we have barely .enough forests, water wa-ter sources, and arable soil for subsistence sub-sistence and no new lush lands to conquer." OUR BEST: " " ' ' 7 j I" ' 1 I - ,v ' If; V V it KAY UNDqUST The past week has shown how we feel about a weQ-ccached team, which so ably represents southern Utah. Here's to Coach Ray Lind-quist Lind-quist who has brought a team through a hectic season and taken them to the Western States Conference Confer-ence where they so ably accounted for themselves. . . so this week we name Coach Ray Lindqulst one of "Our Best". |
