Show Auto VrecIt Kills Student Near Cedar An automobile accident caused by slippery roads took the life of Miss Francis Nellie Heflin, 23, of California, yesterday evening. Miss Heflin, a student of the Brlgham Young university at Provo, was en-rout en-rout to her home for a vacation when the accident happened. The accident occurred near the Webster farm on Highway 91, seven miles north of Cedar City. The car in which Miss Heflin was riding skidded on the slippery highway and turned over. The young lady suffered head injuries which caused her death, when she was thrown from the car, and was apparently struck by the car as it rolled over. Two companions, Fred A. Wager Jr., 27, driver of the car, and Miss Frances Toms, 26, both of San Diego Die-go Cal., also B Y U students, escaped es-caped with minor Injuries. Lt. L. J. Adams of the state highway high-way patrol and Iron county Deputy Sheriff Arch Benson, Parowan, took the Injured to Cedar City. Dr. L. V. Broadbent said Miss Heflin suffered intra-cranlal injuries and probably died instantly. He released Mr. Wager and Miss Toms after treating them for minor abrasions and lacerations in Cedar City. Miss Toms was also thrown from the car, but escaped serious Injury. Miss Heflin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Heflin, El Cajon, California, was born June 14, 1924. in northern California. She attended attend-ed South Fork high school at Mi-rando, Mi-rando, Cal., and was -president of the school's Girls' league. She was a member of the California Scholastic Scholas-tic Society and of the high school band. She had served a year with the WAVES. She entered B Y U In the fall of 1947 and was studying to be a laboratory technician. She resided at the B Y U residence hall for women. She had left school Wednesday Wed-nesday noon and planned to return Monday. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints. Surviylng are a brother and three sisters, In addition to her parents. The body is at the Southern Utah Mortuary In Cedar Oily pending funeral arrangements. Mr. Wager, a freshman at B Y U Is a veteran of four years navy service. Miss Toms, an ex-WAVE is a sophomore. |
