Show 1 NEEDLE -AND -THREAD NEEDLE AND THREAD (Stipa comata) Grows chiefly chief-ly in the western Plains and Basin areas of the est and South as far as the Texas plains, usually in rather and locations, and is partial to sandy or gravelly soil. A moderately mod-erately coarse bunch grass, growing 2 to 4 feet tall. Reproduces Re-produces only from seed and is easily killed by grazing unless permitted to seed. Heads have long curling awns 5 to 6 inches long. Very good early spring and fall feed in the areas where it is adapted. Starts growth very early. ear-ly. Sometimes eaten freely in winter. The awns may be injurious to sheep if grazed when mature and before the awns fall off. x |
