Show THE SILO INDUSTRY REACHES IRON CO. I', stead of befog a distant possibility the silo is now a reality in Iron county. Charles Bryant of Cedar City has the honor of erecting the first silo south of Nephi. At present the Branch Agricultural College is erecting a similar silo of 100 ton rapacity. A soon as the College is through with the forms Wm. Wood will erect his silo at Cedar City and from there the forms will probably go to Albert Mathis of New Harmony. Whether more than the four will be built this season is not known. But with four silos in our section, there will be no xcuse for our farmers forming a vague picture in their minds of b preserving jar that cures 100 tons of corn, but all will have a chance to examine the silo und silage. Four years ago the first silo was built in Utah. To-day Utah has 400 silos. Now the first silo is built in Iron county, with Iron county the corn belt of Utah, can you estimate the number in four years from now? The silo passed the experimental stage years ago. It is simply a large air-tight container in which the corn, ear and fodder, after being cut in 1-2 to 1 inch lengths, is placed. Corn fermenting fer-menting in the presence of air pet-refics, pet-refics, in the absence of air the sugar changes to acid, principally acetic and lactic and keeps perfectly. Of cource silage is not equal to alfalfa hay in value on account ef the large percentage of water it contains, but on well managed farms the cost of growing and harvesting a ton of siluge only runs from $2.50 to $3.00 a ton. At the present time, when the change from the large range herds to the smaller farm flocks is beginning the cheap feed possibilities should be considered. In order that you may know the exact ex-act cost, I am giving the cost of the 100 ton monolithic concrete silo of Charles Bryant. TABLE OF COST 128 bags cement at $1.15 $147.20 40 loads gravel 22.50 1 60 feet 1 inch pipe 12.50 16 rods pipe for ladder 8.80 j Oil, buckets, nails, 7.00 Reinforcing Wire (24 rods) ....20.00 Lumber for scaffold and forms. .15.00 Rent on forms 22.50 Total cost of material. . . .$255.50 COST OF LABOR 2 men 13 days at $2.50 $65.00 1 1 man 8 days at 2.50 20.00 ! 1 man 15 days at 2.50 37.50 Total cost of silo $278.50 There will be a probable cost of $10 i to $12 when the inside of the silo is tarred. Of course this need not be all cash outlay as Mr. Bryant has charged up against the silo. |
