Show j THAT REMINDS ME Here is a story just now going the rounds which we consider well worthy of respect : ... "Archbishop Ryan, visiting a small parish in a mining district for the purpose pur-pose of administering confirmation, asked one nervous little girl what matrimony was, and . she answered that it was 'a state of terrible torment which those who enter it are compelled to undergo for a time to prepare them for a brighter and better world.' 'No, no," remonstrated the pastor, 'that Isn't matrimony; that's the definition of purgatory.' 'Leave her alone,' said the archbishop: 'maybe she's right. What do you or I know about it?' " , This story is at least fifty years old. It used to be associated with the name of Archbishop Murray of Dublin, who died a generation ago. Catholic Citizen. A well known Newark (N. J.) lawyer had his portrait painted in his favorite attitude standing with his hands in his pockets. It -r .-upied quite a prominent place on the "til of- a-certain political club. One day, shortly after. It had been installed, in-stalled, a number of men were criticizing it. and all but one, a client of the lawyer, agreed that -it was a striking likeness. The client declared-it-was not the original. origi-nal. "Just show us where it is not like him?"' one of them asked. '"Taint, no 'taint," responded the client. "Don't you see he has got his hands in his own pockets." The teacher who was reading selections from the works of great authors was much annoyed by the inattention of the children, and was compelled to pause now and then to administer a reproof. "We will read now," she said, "something "some-thing from .the. immortal Macaulay.. He says Katie Simmons, take your fingers out of your ears this Instant, or I shall punish you." The angular passenger stuck her head out through the car window. "Why.',' she asked the man on the station sta-tion platform, "did you speak just now of that singular looking machine as 'she'?" "Because, ma'am," replied the man on the platform, "it's a mail snatcher." And she took her head in again. |
