Show VI JUDGE BLAKE Dear Vi: When you have an old, pithy onion that is starting to sprout, instead of discarding it, plant it in a little pot. The sprouts will continue to grow for a few weeks. Meantime, you can snip them off to use in salads, soup, spaghetti, etc. So-o-o-handy. Marguerite Stobbs Dear Vi: Because he is color blind, my husband used to have trouble matching his pants and coats, shirts and ties. Sometimes he would even wear brown socks with black shoes. Now. instead of putting his clean socks in a drawer, I fold them and put them in his shoes. I also attach strips of self-adhering tape to his clothing on which I have written the colors. These can be removed and used over and over. This, plus making sure the pants and coat for each suit are hung together makes it easy for him to match up his outfits. Mary Lou Easy Does It: That's our motto, so let's review some ways to simplify our homemaking: In the kitchen: Plan meals early in the day. Preplanning really simplifies meal preparation. Start with clean kitchen and keep it clean. Put everything back in its place promptly. Don't let garbage or trash accumulate. Wipe up that spill now. While waiting for a pot to boil or cookies to bake, tidy up a drawer or cupboard. It's easier to do one a day than all on Saturday. Wash and put away pots, pans, mixing bowls all large items as soon as you empty them. Much quicker than trying to work around the clutter they make or fit them into the dishwasher. Clutter wastes more time than anything. Get right at those dishes. If you don't have time to do the entire job, at least put them to soak, put the food away, wipe off counters, and set a pretty centerpiece on the table. All family members can help. Ration your time and you'll cut down your kitchen hours. Throughout the House: Pretty up first. This means, up everything away, make beds, wipe out basins, and dust. Your work will be easier and more pleasant, and if someone drops in, your house will still look neat and attractive. Tackle one big job weekly windows, walls, waxing floors, etc. Don't procrastinate. Put clothes away when you take them off. Declutter constantly. (This means all family members.) Work consistently. Don't flit from task to task. Get the job done, then collect your reward time out for a nap or whatever. Remember: houses are made for people, not people for houses. Relax. Enjoy your home. You can if you keep it neat and attractive. |
