Show Full week of temperatures in the nineties sparked a rash of fires throughout the county. This one west of Escalante blackened ( Photo by Marilyn Jackwn) approximately 10 acre of brush and agricultural land that was contained by Escalante Firemen. Fire Destroys Brush Land Near Escalante ESCALANTE - A Sunday afternoon fire blackened approximately 10 acres of brush and agricultural land three miles west of Escalante on the north side of Utah Highway 12. The fire was set by land owner Boyd Hucker "to clear a little land." When it blazed out of control, the Escalante Fire Department was called. Under the direction of Escalante Fire Chief Gary Lane Liston, volunteer members of the department worked some two and one-half hours to contain the blaze. A caterpillar owned by Pat Coughlin was called upon to push a fire line. When fire raged on ' he west end, the Forest Service was called upon for assistance They rosopnded with a truck, pumper and crewman Escalante's new pager system proved very useful in summoning the more than 20 voluntenrs who worked to control the fire Chief Liston said, "people should be cautious of fires through the summer heat and should remember the emergency number in use throughout the county 7t; ::4ll) if they need help." This is the third fire in the Escalante area during the past week. The Escalante Fire Department responded to two earlier brush fires with little loss. |
