Show Major Renovation Scheduled For Piute Reservoir Dam This Fall A major renovation project at the Piute Reservoir dam is expected to get underway this fall following opening of bids in Orem Tuesday. The announcement of the low bidder and awarding of the contract was scheduled Wednesday after Reaper press time. Virge Brown, Annabella, member of the Central Utah Water Project board of directors, said the project is expected to cost between $300,000 and $350,000 and will include three major projects. These include the rebuilding of the spillway structure; rehabilitation of the spillway channel and installation of subsurface drains. The spillway chute will have new floor and sides constructed to replace the badly deteriorated condition of the present structure. Along with that, the spillway gates will be replaced to better control water going into the spillway. Cost of the spillway gates is the most expensive, and is estimated to cost $245,000. The spillway chute rebuilding will cost some $80,000 and the subsurface drain is estimated at $20,000. The latter will include replacing a perforated pipe at the base of the dam which will allow any seepage to be taken out of the earth structure and prevent deterioration. Mr. Brown said the entire project will be paid for by CUP funds. The project will cost more than Sevier County has put into CUP through its mill levy which went into effect in 1968. "In other words, Sevier County will get all its money back from CUP levies with this project," Mr. Brown said. Mr. Brown pointed out that the Piute Reservoir serves all the major canal companies as well as all other users of Sevier River water as far north as Vermillion. |
