Show Never dreaming anything would come of filling out forms and officially entering the 1979 Civic Beautifica-tion Contest sponsored by The Salt Lake Tribune and CANNONVILLE Never really suspecting that anything would come of their entry in the 1979 Civic Beautification Contest sponsored by The. Salt Lake Tribune in conjunction with the Utah State University Extension Services, the Associated Garden Clubs, and the Utah Association Nurserymen, the Elmer other civic groups, Elmer Henderson, 64 of Cannonville, received word this week that his home had been selected to receive a certificate of merit for beautification. State Home Beautification Award Presented to Cannonville Couple Henderson's were suprised ana tnnlled upon receiving notice this week that their home has been selected to receive a district award. Henderson, 64, has accomplished his. award winning project despite a serious physical handicap which forces him to rely constantly on the flow of oxygen to his damaged lungs which suffered exposure to ammonia fumes some years ago. He has refused to allow his breathing handicap to diminish his desires to accomplish his beautification project which was begun about a year ago. In order to breathe, Henderson must have a constant flow of oxygen, so he has mounted large oxygen tanks on the back of his pickup truck and moves the truck as he works to various parts of his yard. For the more remote sections of his property, he has smaller portable tanks which he can wheel around his yard. Henderson has planted a lush green lawn, with many beautiful patches of flowers. He has planted a variety of fruit and two blue spurces that act as sentinals in his front yard. Lovely shade trees provide a restful atmosphere when the vegetable garden tires him briefly. - The Hcnder&is weie iX.e lo take advantage of the special offer to town residents when trees were purchased for the overall town beautification project and purchase their trees at a reduced rate. A focal point of the prize-qenning project is the decorative rock work surrounding al old hand pump well executed by Henderson himself. A Cannonville native.the 64 year old Henderson, worked for many years as a farmer, plumber, and in construction work before his retirement. He and his wife, Betty are the parents of four sons and a daughter and grandparents of 10. The Hendersons were unable to attend the special awards program held last Saturday at the Garden Center in Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City where contest winners were honored with a tea and a program of slides of the prize wimming gardens, but they were excited to be counted among the winners and were pleased with the certificate of merit presented to them. |
