Show State Request Cleanup Of Neglected Orchards There are about 80 acres of apple trees in Kane and Garfield counties. Some of the trees are well managed while others are neglected and abandoned. The State Department of Agriculture requests that all neglected orchards be cleaned up or removed in compliance with state law. County extension agent Verl Matthews is going to conduct a tour through different orchards in Garfield County where a discussion on alternatives for achieving better management and marketing of apples will be discussed. Dr. Alvin Hanson of Utah State University and possibly Lowell Bagley, district agricultural inspector, will be on hand to assist with the workshops. The tours and lectures will be conducted Feb. 3 beginning at 9 a.m. at Roy Chlarson's Store in Tropic. Persons will tour the Chlarson apple trees. At 1 p.m. Thurman Spencer will conduct an orchard tour at his ranch in Escalante. A discussion on marketing apples will follow at 4 p m. at the Tropic High School. Matthews urges every person growing apple trees to attend the special meetings During a good pror-duction year, most of the apples never get to market, according to Matthews. |
