They are being made and installed by Harold 'Shine' Fullmer, Derald Lay and Howard Slmklns. Funds Allocated For Powell District Project on Forest A total of $46,000 will be spent in the community to provide jobs for the Youth Adult Conservation Corp and Old American piugrams in the Powell Rangei District, according to Walter 'Pete' Pierson, district forest ranger The Old American program will enable 'he hiring of three people 05 and older unable to get jobs other places. These people will be able to work about 31 hours a week the year around, doing jobs in tin- district that should be completed, but because of no funding otherwise are not getting done. At the present time 140 swinging grills are being built to be installed on the side of the existing fire rings in the .ampgrounds throughout the district Seventy grills will br installed at Panguitch Lake, 37 at Red Canyon and 33 will be put in at Kings Creek campground Besides installing and making the grills the programs will also improve the garbage boxes, provide jobs, fences, road signs, water devices for cattle and otber jobs During the summer one Old American employee will go with the fencing crew and another with the clean-up and maintenance crew; one is working in the office. Wages paid are from the minimum wage to an amount determined by the capability of the person working The second program provides jobs for seven boys that either dropped out of school or are unable to get a job after graduating. "Hopefully, this program will give the boys an incentive to either further their education or learn a trade," Pierson said. They will be taught several different skills such as how to use carpentry tools and how to fight fires Hopefully they will also be taught enough at this time to pass their General Education Achievement test, enabling tliem to get their high school diploma, which is very important and necessary to get a good job in many places, said Pierson These boys have already improved and repaired about 30 miles of boun dary fence and built other fences in needed locations. Plans are for them to complete other necessary jobs throughout the district Both programs will hopefully stay for many years to come according to Pierson, but the youth in the YACC program are only allowed to em oil for one year |
