Show uintah basin is really cool (Continued from page 10) cliff face showing the dinosaur bones. In eastern Utah towns you will see many Indians for this is Ute country. For many years the remnants of this Indian tribe, suffered hardship and poverty, but in recent years they have made great strides in leadership and planning, have successfully sued the United States government to recompense them for land taken away from them in the last century. The money has been used for individual and group betterment. The tribe also permits hunting and fishing on their lands, but special licenses are required and may be purchased in most area towns. Newest Indian project is Bottle Hollow Resort, near Roosevelt, a motel, dining and resort center. The Ute Indians may have gone modem in many of their ways of life, but they still cling to some of the old customs. They welcome spring with Bear Dances and in June and early August they dance the.tradition-a- l Sun Dance. Other minor dances are performed at various times during the year. Down in the southern part of the basin, Ute country mixes in with Bandit country, for Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and others of that ilk used the labyrinth of canyons as hideouts and, some say, places to hide their loot. There are also Indian oetroglyphs in the area and many ruins of Indian forts, villages and storage buildings.
