It has been estimated there are some five million such recreational vehicles in the nation. But with the growing popularivehicles has come ty of off-roa- d some abuse often unintended of the public lands in the state, according to Robert D. Nielson, Bureau of Land Management state director for Utah. The BLM administers nearly 23 million acres m Utah, or approximately 43 percent of the states is a Vacation at the total land area. As a result of the impact this activity is having on public lands, President Richard M. Nixon has issued an executive order "to establish policies and provide for procedures that will ensure that the use of vehicles on public lands will be controlled and directed so as to protect the resources of those lands, to promote the safety of all users of those lands, and to minimize conflicts among the various uses of those lands The executive order directed the Secretaries of Interior, Agriculture and Defense and the Tennessee Authority Valley board of directors to develop regulations within six months by which areas will be designated vehicles and for use of other areas will be closed to that use. In addition, the agencies are to publish within one prescribing year regulations under what conditions off road vehicles may be operated on the public lands Already the BLM in Utah has been giving attention to vehicle use of the public lands Since 1969 the bureau has had the Slickrock Bike Trail about three miles east of Moab, the first designated and marked trail in Utah for trail bikes. For relatively inexperienced riders there is a practice loop a little more than two miles long at the beginning of the course The marked trail for experienced nders is more than 10 miles long (not including side trails) and takes about five hours to travel.
