The presentation will be at 2 p.m. at the headquarters of the Ogden Fraternal Order; of t.. Ogden. Eagles, The grant will be used for a pilot research study of the role ot elastic tissue disease as a cause of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Atherosclerosis now is the No. 1 cause of death and disability in the nation, some authorities report. While the cause of atherosclerosis is unknown, research has been aimed primarily at attributing it to abnormal fat metabolism. A theory and one now to be investigated by U n i v e rsity researchers proposes that the primary defect is disruption and weakening of the fibrous and elastic elements of large blood vessels. According to this theory, the fatty lesions found on the inner lining of blood vessel walls during atherosclerosis represents secondary consequences of weakening of the vessel wall. The research will be done at the University Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital. 448-24t- h d state, we would be immensely stronger for it, Gov. Rampon said. The governor said he was encouraging the Spanish Speaking Organization for Community Integrity and Opportunity (SOCIO) to develop a course in Chicano history and culture which might serve for a better understanding between persons cf different backgrounds. He said the course will be recommended for all members of the Utah Highway Patrol, probation and parole officers and social worke-- s. Suggests Course for Others I will also suggest the course for all local police officers and teachers seeking certification to teach in any school district with an appreciable Chicano popula tion, the governor said. The powrer of poverty to corrode life, destroy inniative and extinguish hope must be understood before it can be combatted, he said. Cuallenge to Environment Turning to the nation's health problems, Gov. Rampton said what he called a health crisis was due in part to the shortage of approximately 50,000 doctors nationally. increase the We must massively numbers of subpiofessional and paramedical personnel to take oer the more routine duties which now take up so much of the physicians time, the governor said, noting the Medex program under WAV At thg TTnjyorcity nf Pointing out that, among other things, s the nation's rr.assie waste disposal its environment. Gov. Rampton We have become a throwaway said, nation. We must now resolve not to be known for what we throw away, but for what we build and save. And, most of all, w e must build and save people. He noted that an increase in population makts for an inevitable increase .n pollution. In conclusion, the governor said none of the problems of soe'ety can be solved unless the problems are recognized as problems by a broad spectrum of the population. Doc Looks After Ogden Transients Continued From Page B- -l help, well take it to them. Well make the community offer the service its supposed to be offering. The RN doesnt treat cases a registered nurse isnt considered capable of treating no wounds requiring sutures and no medication dispensation. If Mike cant handle a problem, he will find someone who can. Fall Off Trains Falling off freight trains and getting infections in cuts and abrasions is a hazard among the transient population of Ogden, according to Mike. Alcoholics also may fall down steps onto the bottles they carry in their hip pockets. One mans chest began to swell, and Mary couldnt find a doctor. She called Mike, who took the man to the emergency ward at St. Benedicts Hospital. The man is now scheduled for surgery suspected cancer. Another of Marys charges, age 78, suffered from prostate trouble for six months and wouldnt tell anybody Doc started about it not until practicing. Supervises g Mike regularly supervises the pillof a schizophrerfic who hates medicine but is inclined to bizarre behavior without it. Taxi fares spent by welfare to get people to the Harrison Boulevard hospitals have gone dow'n considerably since Mike came along, and its no longer necessary to always send people to the emergency room. I havent called but one doctor since weve been on PAAG a man had been in a fight, Mike said. An important function of 25th Street nursing is to show people how taking to get to the communitys available health services, such as obtaining and using w elfare medical cards. Good Life for RXs According to Mike, 25th Street offers a good life for RNs. If he feels like it, hell load a friendly resident onto his motorcycle for a guided tour west of the depot, of the jungle live w here some real in box cars and boxes. Its amazing the number of friends Mike makes on 25th Street the kind of friends who dont play games and who arent so wrapped up in the business world that they dont have time to care sometimes, said Mike. One day Doc watched a friend bum a package of cigarettes, but half an hour later he had given it to a couple of guys heading out on a freight train. rs |
