Show trappei left their mark em bridgerEsmd in the early part of the .xlong 19th and Ameucan ceniui y English trappers were plying their trade in the northeastern part of what is now Utah, looking for beaver and mink. The area is now encompassed by Cache and Rich counties. The word Cache comes from the practice of early trappers to store or cache their furs or supplies in this foresteu irea. Nowadays the area is known as Bridgerland, named after the almost legendary Jim Bridger who was in the area as early as 1824 and who reputedly rode a bullskin boat down the Bear River to Great Salt Lake. Other early trappers associated with this Utah area were Peter Skene Ogden (after whom Ogden, the states second city is named), Etienne Provost (after whom Provo is named), John Charles Fremont, Kit Carson, and many others. So there was a lot of activity going on in the area more than 100 years ago, and although the type of activity has changed, theres still much to do and see in this fertile and forested area. Cache Valley, a fertile farming locale at the foot of tall mountains, is noted for its fine farms and clean communities. farms are modern, of course, but for a touch of nostale gia one of the last of the is conducted bees threshing each fall at Mendon on the L. Wood, in addition to his collection of actual threshers and other farm machinery from the past, also has a scale model The old-tim- old-tim- n collection. Up in Logan, Utahs fourth largest city, are several points of interest. It is the site of one of the Mormon temples, this striking building overlooking the town with a quiet and restful park nearby, from where the Temple shows up against a mountain backdrop. Also overlooking the town and Cache Valley is Utah State University. This school, with lots of green grass, offers a complete schedule of colleges and classes on both the undergraduate and graduate level. It also has a fine arts gallery and two excellent exhibits. One, Man and his Bread Museum is the story of agriculture from the past to the present, and the other is the Intermountain Herbarium, a complete repository of plant species. Logan Canyon has its attractions. About 15 miles up the canyon and then a hike of about a mile and a half is the Jardine Juniper, reputed to be about 3.000 years old and the worlds oldest and largest of its kind; nearby is Logan Cave about 2.000 feet long; and theres Beaver Mountain winter sports area. The fishing also is great along the Logan River. Lying half in Utah and half in Idaho is Bear Lake which is one of the states foremost spots for water activities including boating, swimming, water skiing, scuba diving and fishing. Although Utah is supposed to be a desert state, only five states have more inland water than Utah and the states residents own upwards of 20,000 boats. A ride around Bear Lake will give the visitor an idea of the small towns which graced the early-da- y landscape, with quiet the big attraction herp Another drive ot interest is uie being Willard Mountain Drive. This climbs from Mantua south on an unpaved road, up the steep slopes of the Wasatch M mntains through the Cache National Forest. Inspiration Point is at the top of Willard Mountain and gives the visitor a dramatic view from the 9,400-folevel. There is a picnic area some miles below the peak. For winter visitors, a short rip out of I ova to Hardware tiancn is a must. There hundreds of elk come down to the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources facility to be fed. The state has built a new visitor center at the ranch and maintain a horse-draw- n sled that takes visitors out among the elk that make up the large herd. Generally the elk are fed in January and February. There is Something for EVERYONE SRIDSERLAND ru For the sightseer, there's historical towns, the Cache Nationol Forest with one of the world's oldest trees, the Jardine Juniper, glacial lakes, Logan Canyon and many special events.
