'Daddy said we shouldn't ask Santa for too many things. I'll chop my list down to a dozen." NANCY f By SIT.' SPEAK Interested in diseases of the mind, she worked with mentally handicapped children when she was a young physician. She started many new teaching meth- oC? that proved very successful. 98 to 1900, Dr. Montessori From was principal of a school for mentally hanaicnnped children in Rome, and then she began working with normal children. Dr. Montessori thought children should be free to work at their own speed, with the teacher acting as as guide rather than as a formal instructor. Another of her ideas was that children should choose what they wanted to learn and work at studies they liked. These theories she practiced at her school, the House of Children, in Rome. In 1922 she was appointed inspector of schools for the Italian government. At first, the dictator, Benito Mussolini, approved of her work, but in 1934 he closed all her schools in Italy. She continued to instruct teachers in her methods in Spain, and later in India. Dr. Montessori died in the Netherlands, where she had gone to start a training center. Maria Montessori's methods have influenced teaching practices all over the world, especially in nursery school, kindergarten and primary grade levels.
