Later, length of those missions was shortened to two years, then shortened again to 18 months. So when a missionary continues serving a mission almost a hundred years later, it's worth taking note. But that's what is happening with the missionary board of the . Aw mmmmmmrrrv- nt ' ar- .,.jr. r"r iiiiiiiiiilliiH Vineyard Ward, Orem South Stake. The board holds pictures of every missionary who has been called to serve from the ward since its beginning as the North Lakeview Ward in 1891. "It's a missionary motivator," said Rex Blake, who, with Arthur Phesey took over maintenance of the board after the death of Mali-ceClegg Wells, who started the board many years ago. "People stand in the hall looking at it. When they see their grandfathers and fathers, they decide they want to be on it too, "he said. The board contains 153 photographs of the 168 missionaries who - J 1 have been " U tjiia1 fc - l"" irr "TTTT'-r- " 111 C2T i SI Orem LDS Ward mission board lists elders, sisters for nearly 1912 to 1914. His father, Samuel H. Blake (row 1, second from right), went to the same place from 1906 to 1908. Rex Blake (row 3, far right) served a mission from 1934 to 1936, also to the British Isles, and Blake's oldest son, Richard H. Blake (row 6, photo 1), served a mission to the Central Atlantic states from 1960 to 1962. There were a lot of boys eligible and wanting to go, but they were wanted in the Army." The board also shows histories of family missionary activity. In Blake's family, for example, there are 12 missionaries on the board encompassing four generations. His grandfather, William Blake (row 2, photo 6), served a mission to the British Isles from on missions, beginning with Conrad Maag Sr. who went to Switzerland from 1891 to 1893, and ending, as of last August, with Virginia Parada who served a mission to San Diego from 1981 to 1982. Blake said the board reflects in the church's missionary history. "There's a trend in the war years," he said. "During World War II there was a missionary allotment that said trends JL 100 years. rrrtiTuTnrni J em. iiiiiiiiiiiii L .JL m uJ five left," he said. Holdaways and the Gammons also have pictures covering multiple generations, said Blake. Blake hypothesized that the same families stay in the same ward for so long "because we're a dairy farm community. That's why we go back so many generations." Blake, who was born into the ward, said he remembers a time when members of the ward owned 40 herds of dairy cattle. Blake has six children himself, none of whom still live in Utah County. Nevertheless, he continues his work on the missionary board. "It's quite a thing to show so many years of missionary service" he said. CHRISTMAS COMPUTER CAMP TRS-8- 0 5 and adults will be held Camps for ages Dec. at Radio Shack Computer Centers.
