CALLCOTT GENEVA, Switzerland (UPI) -officials who have n breakwatched the down of U.S. Soviet arms control talks said it was uncertain when Moscow would return to the negotiating table. Western governments believe it will be in Moscow's own interest to eventually return to the talks and that the Soviets will realize it will damage their image if they refuse. But some officials say the Soviets could be using the walkouts to m mipulate Western public opinion to press for U.S. concessions at the talks. "We have the feeling that the Soviet Union wants to speculate on the fear of the people, on their concern about world peace and the possibility of an armed conflict," Belgian Foreign Minister Leo Tindemans said Thursday after the Soviets suspended START, the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks, e which covers nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union broke off the Intermediate Nuclear Forces, or misINF talks on medium-rang- e siles in Europe, on Nov. 23. In both cases the Soviets refused to fix any resumption date. An How to Avoid Stomach Pain By Lawrence Lamb, M.D. I am DEAR DR. LAMB extremely concerned about what foods are likely to cause trouble now that my physician has diagnosed diverticulosis. Do you have a brochure or something to help me know what to avoid? Even though I am trying to be careful, there is often a heaviness in my stomach that is quite uncomfortable But I do want to avoid diverticulitis. DEAR READER Keep in mind that those little pockets of the colon are extremely common. Some estimate that as many as 70 percent of older people have them and they are not rare in people below age 50. In many people, they cause no symptoms at all. But a spastic colon, which does cause symptoms, may cause diverticulosis. When a spasm exists and pressure builds up in the - 'IAli V" Km Artificial trees shown have branches. flame-resista- JL"! The heaviness you describe may be from a basic poor function of your colon rather than the diverticula. Let your doctor guide you, but the usual advice today is to use more bulk in the diet. This includes whole-whe- at products, perhaps some miller's bran and avoid foods that do not contain any bulk. I have discussed the current thinking about diet in diverticular disease in The Health Lettr Diverticulosis, which I am sending you. Others who want this issue can send 75 cents with a long, stamped, envelope for it to me in care of this newspaper, P.O. Box 1551, Radio Qty Station, New York, NY 10019. The complications of diverticulosis may cause symptoms. Diverticulitis, which means inflammation of one of the small pockets, causes pain and symptoms similar to appendicitis. But ft is usually on the left side. That is because the diverticula are mostly on the left side of the colon. These symptoms are different from the symptoms of a spastic colon. We do not know why a diverticulum becomes inflamed any more than we know why the appendix becomes inflamed. But patients with diverticula are often advised to avoid seeds, such as grape seeds, for fear that they may lodge themselves in a diverticulum and cause problems. The vast majority of diverticulitis cases are not on this basis. Probably the best thing you can do is follow a sensible diet that encourages good colon function. Laxatives should be avoided, as well as any foods that caUse you to have symptoms. 5-- SAVE $25 to 45 on 62 ft. Christmas trees 'CHARGE -- ,99 land Beautiful Balsam Mountain King 158 tips, 54-ibase.
