Kimball Friday sent the church's top lawyer to Bogota, Colombia to investigate the apparent theft of possibly $1 million by a Mormon official in that country. Church spokesman Jerry Cahill said Wilford W. Kirton Jr. flew to Bogota to help in the investigation of the alleged theft. Cahill said the missing money includes tithing payments made by church members as well as building construction funds and other monies. The amount missing was originally set at $1.15 million, but Cahill said Friday later calculations indicated it was not nearly that much. He said, however, it was not known just how much was taken. A spokesman for a judicial commission investigating the apparent embezzlement from the church said Gonzalo Morales Quintero, the former financial manager for the Mormons in Colombia, was suspected of the theft. Another church official, Alvaro Prieto Fula, said Moralez Quintero had disappeared recently and his whereabouts still were unknown. "He lived a life of royalty, traveling often outside the country and making many touristic trips." Prieto Fula said. "The matter is still under investigation," Cahill said from the church's World Headquarters in Salt Lake City. "But our preliminary understanding suggests that the dollar figures reported are tremendously inflated. Cahill said there are about 25,-00- 0 Mormons in Colombia. He said about 350 missionaries for the church are assigned to the country. Democrats Dub Meese "Scrooge" - More NORFOLK. Va.
