Show THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Page 26 Herpes Rises Among the Newborns - the virus herpes studies CHICAGO (UPI) show Two new apparently can survive long enough on plastic surfaces of hot tubs to infect bathers, and more and more babies are being infected as they leave the mother's womb. Hot tubs were studied when several people complained of contracting genital herpes nonsex-uall- y after bathing in spas in the Wasliington, D.C., area. Lata S. Nerurkar and National Institutes of Health colleagues reported last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association that chlorine and bromine in spa water kill herpes simplex virus HSV introduced by infected bathers. But they said the virus may thrive for up to 45 hours on adjacent benches, seats and pool-sid- e areas. No HSV was isolated from the bath water taken from the hot tubs, the researchers said. But they found HSV does survive in tap water, distilled water and when applied to plastic surfaces that are kept in humid areas. In another Journal article, Dr. John Sullivan-Bolya- i and University of Washington colleagues found herpes infection affecting newborns in the Seattle area has increased 4.5 times in recent years. The rate went from 2.6 per 100,000 live births from Sunday, December Churchwomen Seek Help Issue Honduras on From U.S. - WASHINGTON (UPI) The 150 churchwomen who were barred from entering Honduras to hold a prayer vigil last week are inWash-ingto- n to ask government officials why the United States refused to help them. The American and Canadian members of the "Women's Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in Central America and the Caribbean" appeared with Rep. Patriat a news cia Schroeder, the Reagan administration was behind the Honduran decision to bar the 150 religious and lay women from entering the country to conduct a prayer vigil. "It seems you are not allowed to rescue the U.S. from its own military folly," Ms. Schroeder said at the news conference. "It's OK to go down there with M16s, but it's not OK to go down there with prayers, rosaries and B- aborted pilgrimage for peace and to demand action by the U.S. ernment's decision Dec. conference to discuss their government. The women later held a prayer vigil in a park across from the White House. The group wants the administration to press Honduras for a clarification of the special restrictions it has placed on "religious persons" entering the country and a retraction of comments attributed to a Honduran official in the Honduran press that the group was affiliated with "left-win- g extremists" and planned to "block roads (and) disturb the peace." Schroeder questioned whether She indicated the Honduran gov5 not to allow 50 members of the pilgrimage to deplane at the Teguciagalpa airport and its refusal to allow the remaining 100 women to board their plane in Honduras-boun- d New Orleans was influenced by the United States. However, Ms. Schroeder added cautiously, "No one will be able to prove it in 100 years." She questioned "why would the Honduran government be afraid" of 150 churchwomen. "It doesn't make any logical sense at all." She pointed out the incident came shortly after President Reagan vetoed a bill requiring human Another member of Congress, Rep. "This increase in neonatal herpes parallels the rising prevalence of genital HSV infection reported nationwide and from King County (Washington)," the researchers said. "The increasing number of women with genital HSV infections in the United States suggests that the incidence of neonatal herpes may continue to rise.
