There has been some road damage near the bridge at the Jordan River pumping station area from last year's flooding and waters from the lake and Jordan River again threaten the road. If the road bed is not raised at this point by the county, Saratoga will have detour signs to proceed west to Redwood Road on Highway U-73, and from there Saratoga is easily accessible. ac-cessible. Saratoga is open daily to the public and will be throughout the summer beginning Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 26. Saratoga Resort, located on the north west shore of Utah Lake, is the oldest swimming resort in Utah. The hot springs at Saratoga first received attention in 1856 when several Indian renegardes from the tribe of Chief Tintic were found slain nearby. Many arrowheads and other Indian artifacts found in and around Saratoga lead historians to believe much Indian activity took place in and around the resort area prior to the coming of the white man. Around 1862 the hot springs at Saratoga' were first used by a young Austrian painter to irrigate an apple orchard. The area shortly thereafter became a popular picnic place for people who were establishing communities in Lehi and American Fork. As near as can be remembered, a swimming pool and other buildings were built during the 1890's, and the resort was named Saratoga Springs after the famous New York state spa, because of its many similarities and hot springs. Saratoga and the adjoining farm property were operated by the Austin brothers until 1928 when it was sold to Frank and Clarrisa Eastmond. Through the years the resort was a family operation, with all members of the family participating in the spring and summer seasons. In November of 1961 a tragic automobile took the lives of both Frank and Clarrisa Eastmond while they were on a trip to California. In April of 1963, their son Robert M. (Mick) Eastmond became lessee and general manager of Saratoga. He was interested in converting Saratoga into an amusement park and by 1966 the resort featured 20 rides, midway games, four natural warm spring swimming pools, an arcade, a miniature golf course, a boat harbor, lake cruises and snack bars. In May of 1968 a disastrous fire at Saratoga destroyed the structure housing the indoor swimming pool and the large adjoining arcade building. Also burned completely were snack bars and the dressing rooms. The loss was great since the insurance carried nowhere near Flaming Gorge - Outdoor Playground Discover for yourself one of the greatest outdoor playgrounds in the west Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is an expansive and beautiful recreation paradise offering a wide spectrum of activities ranging from the excitement of running the Green River to the serenity of sight-seeing and bird watching. During the 1978 season, because of the high cost of maintenance and insurance, the decision was made to sell the major rides, keeping the kiddieland rides, and changing the concept to a water oriented picnic park. In 1979 Mr. Eastmond built a large water slide 350 feet in length and three stories high. It is called the "Kamikaze Water-slide." Water-slide." It uses a pumping system that pumps 2,000 gallons of water per minutes to give riders a most thrilling experience.
