Show A 10-polnt scoring error brought Mountain View, Ben Lomond, and Timp View within two points of each other going into the last race in Friday's Fri-day's 3A State Track and Field Championship Cham-pionship at BYU. Mountain View then ran away from.the field in the mile relay to win the race and the meet for the second year in a row. "It was determination of the boys. They did what they had to do to win. They were behind a couple of times and they kept coming back," said Coach Mark Hanson of the Bruins. - "We had great athletes, the right attitude, willingness to work, and good organization," she added. Mountain View's 4 x 400 meter relay team was the only first-place finisher for the Bruins in the two-day meet. But the Bruins gave such consistent con-sistent second and third place finishes, they ended with a 76-70 finish over Ben Lomond. Tyler Pinegar and Scott Douglas competed fiercely in the 100 meter and 4 x 400 meter relay. "We had equal talent, I don't know what happened," hap-pened," Pinegar said after his relay team lost by a matter of inches to Ben Lomond. Mountain View's girls' track team finished third with a total of 50 points. Stacey Barney of Spanish Fork just edged Jill Fulton of Mountain Moun-tain View in the hurdles. Barney clocked 13.06 and Fulton clocked 15.80. Lamoreatis, Anderson Receive Top Ail-Around Sports Trophies Richard Lamoreaux and Lori Anderson, two Orem High Senior athletes who have been named to several regional and state honors, received the top Ail-Around Boys' and Girls' Trophies last Wednesday night during a special Athletic Awards Assembly honoring dozens of the school's best athletes. Receiving Academic Athlete of the Year Awards were John Mackay and Tanise Mclntire. In addition to the trophies, they received bronze medalions from the U.S. Army Reserve. Mackay has a 3.94 grade point average and has accepted a scholarship to Darthmouth. Tanise, with a 3.94 GPA, was named the Most Valuable Player in the state girls' basketball tournament and has accepted ac-cepted a basketball scholarship to BYU. Recipient of the Tommy Briggs Memorial Trophy was Jimmy Olyer. Named in honor of Tommy, a champion cham-pion tennis player who died of leukemia as a senior at Orem High in 1972, the beautiful statue of a tennis player is furnished each year by Mr. and Mrs. Mel Briggs, both retired Orem school teachers. All the trophies and plaques, other than the Briggs Trophy, were furnished by the Parks Sportsman. Russ Park preented the awards as coaches from the respective sports talked about the teams and announced announ-ced the winners. Parks began the tradition about 30 years ago. Principal Berdean H. New Waterways Residents are advised that the Slate Canyon sandbag channel in Provo can be dangerous both to property and life. Flood officials say the water is very cold and possibly could be incapacitating in-capacitating to anyone playing in it. Section of the channel are deep and the water so dirty it would be difficult dif-ficult to find and rescue a child. Girls' Volleyball: Coach Debra Zirbes; MVP-Lori Anderson; team took third at state with 19-4 record; Lori was MVP at Region and State. Boys' and Girls' Cross Country: Coach Scott Walkinshaw; MVP-Boys-David Howard; MVP-Girls-Annette Bickmore; boys finished second se-cond at state behind Murray; Girls also finished second at state. Howard beat the 4-A champion. Football: Coach Steve Downey; MVP-Richard Lamoreaux; averaged averag-ed 35 yards per kickoff return, had 20 interceptions, and was all-state first team; Orem had 7-3 record; lost to Judge Memorial (eventual champs) in state quarter-finals. Swimming: Coach Brent Hard-castle; Hard-castle; MVP-Boys-Terence Begay; MVP-Girls-DelDe Ramage; MVP-Diving-Boys-Greg Benunin; MVf-Diving-Girls- Kelly Blinzinger. Boys had a 9-4 record, took 4th at region and 10th at state; girls had 6-7 record, took 3rd at region 15th at state. Gymnastics: Coach Brent Hard-castle; Hard-castle; MVP-Alice Skousen, who received" tne 6est all-around score in the state 3-A or 4-A; under Coach Hardcastle during past four years, Are Dangerous follow suit. Girls' Basketball: Coach Paul Clark; MVP-Tanise Mclntire and Krista Streuling; stats were so close; both led team to state championship ; team had 21-3 record, best ever at OHS; both are co-captains, all-region and all-state; Tanise voted MVP in state and yon a scholarship to BYU; Krista won a scholarship to Weber State. Boys' Basketball: Coach Dick Belliston; MVP-John Mackay; best defensive player ever under Coach Belliston; during last three years, five seniors leaving team (of which tallest is 6-3) won 80 of their games. Girls'Tennis: Coach Steve Garrett; Gar-rett; MVP-doubles team of Debbie Warren and Haruni Shimoda; 7 of 13 on team were freshmen; took 4th at region; 5th at state; pair won region doubles title. Boys' Tennis: Coach Steve Garrett; Gar-rett; MVP-Chris Webb; took third in region singles; team won region title: took 4th in state 13 or 14 return next year; had 8-2 dual record. Soccer: Coach Garland Fitzgar-rald; Fitzgar-rald; MVP-Lane Herrick; team cap -tain and leading scorer; team had 17-2-1 record; lost to two teams that eventually won state titles. Baseball: Coach Greg Sheide; MVP-pitcher Mike Gammell; had 10-1 record; team took 2nd at state; Bruin All Star Signs With Ricks An all-star guard on the Mountain Moun-tain View High School basketball team has signed a letter of intent to play for Ricks College. Those placing in the top six were Doug Larsen, high jump, 2nd, 6'7"; Paul Cardon, pole vault, 2nd, 129"; Scott Meadows, 110 M hurdles, 2nd, 15.50; Joe Harmon, 400 meters, 2nd, 49.8; Scott Meadows placed third in the intermediate hurdles with a time of 41.3.
