Show V, Utah County's On Pageant offers thrilling art experience "It was awesome." "It was almost a spiritual experience". "It was breathtaking." All of the above statements were heard from people who attended last year's performance of the Utah Pageant of the Arts. Well, it's not exactly a performance. The "performers" do not recite from a script, nor do they move on stage. Just the opposite, in fact The only scene stealers are the little imps who have starring roles in the Norman Rockwell settings. But still, the performers deserve Oscars. They have been known to maintain a back-breaking pose for several minutes, testing their physical strength, as well as their professional abilities. The performers, or cast members, act out their roles by becoming the live subjects depicted by the masters in the world of art You've probably stared at Gainesborough's "Blue Boy" trying to get the feel of the painting. You've probably visited museums to see paintings of the masters, only to leave disappointed because you 'Heaven Can Wait' presented The Little Bowery theatre at the Promised Valley Playhouse will be presenting "Heaven Can Wait" May 25 through June 16. This production is under the direction of Robert Prevost and stars David Howard as "Joe Pendleton" and Diana Kozlowski as "Bette Logan." Written in 1938 by Harry Segal, "Heaven Can Wait" is a comical fantasy where Joe Pendleton finds himself called back to Heaven before his time, only to find out that there has been a mistake. His only option in returning back to a mortal existance on Earth is to inhabit the body of another person. The play has been the subject of two motion pictures, "Here Comes Mr. Jordan," filmed in 1940 and, more recently, "Heaven Can Wait" with Warren Beatty and James jMaifprniv . .4 . :it j- -st--. :- v; ; Robert Prevost, who has a masters degree in theater arts from Washington State University, and is in the process of finishing his PH.D. in theatre arts from the University of Oregon, says that he is going to direct and stage the show against a BYU lists June A- potpourri of award-winning , watercolors, handmade musical instruments, and drawings will be displayed in the Harris Fine Arts Center galleries at BYU during June. s Admission is free. The annual traveling exhibition from the California-based National Watercolor Society will be ; presented in the B.F. Larsen Gallery daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The watercolors, selected from more than 800 entries, represent the best of this year's 62nd annual exhibition at the Laguna Beach Museum of Art. Final judging for more than $9,000 in prizes was done by Henry T. Hopkins, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The major goals of the society during its 62-year history have been to encourage professional calibre work in watercolor and to educate the public about the creative potential and diversity of aquamedia. ' In Gallery 303, John A. Entertainment just couldn't understand or realize the story, or the motive behind the work. You probably have studied art in high school and college, but have not been able to get in tune with the artist If you attend the Pageant of the Arts, you'll suddenly realize the whys and wherefores of a master painting or sculpture. That realization will be one of the most thrilling experiences in your life. You will be able to relate to both picture and artist. You will be able to understand a bit more about life in general and your relationships with those around you. A whole new world of. understanding will open up to you, through the eyes of an artist This will happen because, as you gaze at the settings on stage, those art pieces will almost come alive. No, not through movement of any kind, but because the exciting narration unfolds the real story behind the painting and it's creator. You'll see the lifesize characters bloom before your eyes, if you can see through the tears. This year's show will maintain set depicting the moods and settings of the late thirties. "I'm also very pleased with my cast," he says. "Each one really looks the part - they're terrific." David Howard is making his Salt Lake acting debut at the Promised Valley Playhouse. He graduated with a masters degree in theater from Penn. State. Diana Kozlowski, a theater graduate of Weber State, is joined by Harold Thomas (Mr. Jordan), Roland Held (Max), Rebecca Hunt (Julia Farnsworth), Todd Copling (Tony Abbott), Karen Dodge (Mrs. Ames), Lorie Smith (messenger 7013), and Michael Brown (Detective Williams). "My wife and I played a lot of Renaissance music with other folks in the Boise area," says Taye, who is an associate professor of art at Boise State University. "I began to feel the need for some other stringed instruments, and after checking into the price of a Renaissance lute, I decided it would be a lot cheaper and perhaps more satisfying to make one." The display is a result of a lot of painstaking research and struggle, he admits. "Some people might find it strange for an art professor to spend a lot of time making musical instruments, but I like music, and I enjoy having the results of my creative efforts used and appreciated ap-preciated by other people." Taye will be honored at a reception Tuesday, June 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the gallery and the public is invited. In addition to the instruments, the Gallery 303 foyer will feature a series of 11 pencil drawings and one oil painting by Utah artist Al R. Young.
