Orem High FHA Plans Social, Installation Installation for next year's Orem High School FHA officers and their closing social will be held Thursday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. Special speaker for the event will be the 1983 National Mother of the Year, LaDawn Jacob. All FHA members and their mothers are invited to the affair. There is no charge. Prospective members and their mothers are invited in-vited to attend also for a nominal fee. Katie Harris of the Orem Boosters, Inc. is handling the booth section of the Summerfest again and reports a lot of interest from those wishing to participate. She announced: announ-ced: "All booths are to be located at the Orem Community Park, 585 West 165 South, in Orem. They may be set up on Thursday, June 15th, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 D.m. Selline may begin on Friday, June 15th, at 11 a.m. until closing, and all day Saturday, Satur-day, June 16th." Freedom Awards Luncheon Set For Provo Fete One of the highlights of this year's America's Freedom Festival at Provo Pro-vo will be the Freedom Awards Luncheon. Lun-cheon. This event, now in its third year, will be held at noon on Friday, July 1, at the new Ivy Towers restaurant (5th West & 1st North in Provo). The Freedom Awards Luncheon is sponsored by the Provo Area Chamber of Commerce and the Freedom Fesitval Committee. The luncheon is conducted each year to honor individuals and groups who have demonstrated exceptional service ser-vice to their neighborhood, community, communi-ty, or country. Nine awards will be given this year in the following categories: good neighbor, outstanding man, outstanding outstan-ding woman, senior citizen, youth, educator, cluborganization, business, and overall (American Freedom Award). The Alpine District Board of Education has approved the appointment appoint-ment of two district Administrative Interns for the coming 1984-85 school year. Viriginia Johnson will intern at Mountain View High School. Eris Sumner will assist with the administration ad-ministration of Orem High School. The one year appointments have been established by the board of education to give selected district personnel per-sonnel a "hands on" experience with school administration. In the positions, posi-tions, the individuals will provide . direct assistance to the two principals in the day-to-day management of the schools. Johnson is a veteran of 21 years in education. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU and holds certificates cer-tificates for teaching, counseling, and administration. Sumner has taught in the Alpine School District since 1970. At present she is a teacher at Orem High School She holds bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU and is presetly a candidate for the Educational Specialist Degree. Two Orem Residents Earn Doctoral At BYU Two residents of Orem-Jeanene Dimick Custer and Leland S. Knight--are among 63 students who received doctoral degrees recently from Brigham Young University. Dr. Custer, an instructional developer for Sperry Corporation in Salt Lake City, earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in educational psychology. Her dissertation dealt with a study of how handicapped students tutored their non-handicapped non-handicapped peers to gain social acceptance. A graduate of Carbon High School, she earned a bachelor's Alpine District walked away with more than its share of state winners in the annual History Fair competition competi-tion held this past week in Salt Lake City. In fact, nearly half of the state winners who will be competing at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in June come from the Alpine School District. The large percentage of these winners are students at American Fork Junior High School where history teacher, Janice Mayne, takes a special interest in-terest in the project. Mayne helped prepare some 200 A.F.J.H. students for district competition com-petition then took 24 of these to state where 15 qualified for the trip to Maryland. "The fair gives kids a reason to learn," said Mayne. "It promotes pro-motes critical thinking." According to Alpine District : Director of Teacher Inservice, Sharon Beck, the History Fair allows students to compete in four separate approaches to the study of history: a project, a history paper, a multimedia multi-media presentation, and performance. perfor-mance. There are three different divisions: divi-sions: elementary, junior, and senior. The theme of this year's competition is "Family and Community." The following winners with their respective places and schools were 'announced at the fair.
