Show " ' ' Tim ii 4 '' 1 'f ' , 1 1 ; 2 . -. : IDI1D Vlisi r1 Symphony combines silent films with music Come and enjoy an evening which combines two great arts: silent film and symphonic music. To open its new Cinema Series on Tuesday, September 22, the Utah Symphony will accompany the silent black and white film classic The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney. Conductor Donald Hunsberger, who compiled and arranged the music for the evening's performance from original scores from the early 1900s, will lead the Symphony as the movie is projected on a screen above the orchestra. Since the highly acclaimed Utah Symphony performance of Eisenstein's . film Alexander Nevslcy during the 1990-91 season, silent film accompaniment is becoming more and more popular. This popularity is growing nationwide thanks to Hunsberger. Hunsberger is the musical director for the Eastman-Dryden Orchestra, an ensemble tha specializes in performing live MB accompaniments to silent films. He is also involved in researching and recording early American theater music. The Phantom of the Opera is the classic story, based on the book by Gaston Leroux, of Erik, a disfigured man living under the Paris Opera House, who falls in love with Christine, a chorus girl. The film centers on Erik's attempt to make Christine the first lady of the opera house. Hunsberger will introduce the film before musically setting the stage by leading the Symphony in Verdi's Overture to La Forsa del Destino. Also joining the Orchestra will be Russell Schmidt featured on piano and synthesized organ, lending a dramatic touch to the score. The movie begins at 8 p.m. in Symphony Hall. Tickets are $12 to $20 and are available at the Utah Symphony Box Office, 533-NOTE, or at all Smith-Tix locations. If available, students with a current ID may purchase tickets for $5.
