Show The Park Record Section B Thursday, September 1 7, 1 992 B Page B5 Miners nip North Summit, 20-1 8, to remain unbeaten continued from B1 "He's an outstanding quarterback," Burns said. "We had talked about containment to our defense I don't know how many times.. .Every time he got outside something bad happened." But Park City made fewer mistakes than North Summit, and used a pair of big plays to take the lead in the second quarter. First, junior quarterback Aaron Graham (4-8, 75 yards) hit Jon Manwaring with a 26-yard scoring pass. On the conversion attempt, Jason Jellerson scored on a reverse that cut the gap to 12-8 with 7:14 left in the half. Then came the biggest play of the game. After the North Summit punter fumbled an errant snap, Park City's Matt Selph snuffed the kick (his second blocked punt in two weeks). Josh Cochran covered the ball in the end zone, and Park City led 14-12 at halftime. Park City added to their lead in the third quarter, when Jason Jellerson, a starter on the Miner basketball team in winter, "boxed out" two North Summit defenders to catch a high floater in the end zone. The play covered 28 yards and put Park City ahead by eight points with 2:43 left in the third quarter. After that, the Miners clung to their lead while the Braves came close to drawing even. North Summit missed a chance to tie when a running back slipped in the backfield on the conversion attempt following their third touchdown. Then, in the game's final two minutes, the Braves' Colby Pace appeared to have broken free for the go-ahead touchdown, only to be tripped up by Park City linebacker Jon Jrfolman. North Summit was repeatedly slowed by penalties, as they were flagged 15 times for 130 yards (compared to seven times for 67 yards for Park City). Mike Ward, a sophomore fullback, played well for the Miners, rushing 15 times for 85 yards. When the gun sounded, the North Summit announcer insisted that the game could not end on a penalty, even though the Miners had declined it. The officials pushed their way through a group of menacing fans, and the Park City players kept their helmets on for the walk to the bus. Park City was 3-0, barely. "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good," said Burns, whose Miners take on Grand County next, at 5 p.m. Sept. 18 at Dozier Field. '1 ' t j. V 4 Jon Manwaring Matt Selph Staton enjoys Wasatch 100 run Park City's Lori Staton endured 100 miles of trail running and 43,700 feet of elevation change to finish fourth in last weekend's Wasatch 100 Endurance Run. ' Staton's time--31 hours, 24 minutes, 1 1 seconds-was fourth-fastest fourth-fastest among the 14 female finishers in the race, and 48th best out of 129 entrants overall. Staton said this year's course, which began in East Layton and finished in the Theatre-in-the-Pines area at the base of Mount Timpanogas, was among the most beautiful she has run on. "The course has never been more beautiful than it was this weekend," the 39-year-old said. "I kind of incorporated all the things I've learned...I had a real wonderful time. I just ran and had fun and really enjoyed myself." Staton is now the first woman to have finished the event six times. She was one of the first competitors in the race in 1980, but had not entered the race in recent years. The women's winner of this year's race was Laura Vaughan, who finished in 25 hours, 48 minutes. Dana Miller won the men's race, in 21:37. Manwaring, Selph are 'Players of the Game' Jon Manwaring and Matt Selph were selected as the "Park City Chiropractic Players of the Game" for their outstanding performances in the Park City High School football team's 20-18 victory over North Summit A 5-10, 157-pound tight end, Manwaring caught a 27-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter against the Braves. The senior pulled down a pass from Aaron Graham at the 5, absorbed a hit and backpedaled into the end zone for Park City's first touchdown. A 6-1, 214-pound defensive tackle, Selph blocked a punt that was recovered in the end zone for the Miners' second touchdown. It was the second blocked punt in two weeks for the senior, who also contributed . four solo tackles and three assists. Each player will receive a free dinner-for-two at McDonald's and a ' plaque commemorating the occasion. And Park City Chiropractic will donate $50 in the name of each player to a Park City High School scholarship fund. GjjCross-Lites Says: "You are a fornven person, but are you a forviving person?
