Commonly referred to as tin cans, food cans actually are made of steel. Besides being recyclable, food cans also are environmentally sound in other ways. For example, canned foods use no energy to store, cost less to transport to supermarkets than fresh foods and need less energy to cook because they already are cooked in the cans, according to the council. Canned foods also have long storage life, meaning fewer trips to the supermarket and less energy consumption. CAROL BUELL, LCSW Psychotherapist INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY THERAPY IS USALTtNOCA i .
