So far this year, the three-time defending state champion Miners have beaten Morgan, Rowland Hall and Grantsville-the three teams who are capable of giving them a run at the state championships. champion-ships. In the team's season opener against Morgan, Miner head coach Dianne Vance replaced her regular starters with players lower on the ladder. Morgan, in turn, agreed to default the match, which was held August 31 at the Park City Racquet Club. Park City captured two individual matches against the Trojans. The first doubles team of Tara Reeves and Chelene Parker won 6-0, 6-1, and the third doubles team of Laura Massey and Carrie Lineberry was victorious by a 6-2, 6-3 score. On Sept. 3, Park City faced Rowland Hall at the Canyon Racquet Club in Salt Lake City. With the regular line-up in action, Park City whipped the Winged Lions, 5-0. The Miners won four of those five matches in straight sets. Then, in the Ogden Invitational, Park City topped Grants ville, 4-1, en route to a third-place finish. A 3A powerhouse, Ogden High School, handed Park City their only loss at the tourney. The Miner line-up features sophomores at each of the top three spots in singles, and upperclassmen on both doubles teams. No. 1 singles player Mary Mahon is the team's most skilled competitor. Vance says Mahon, a sophomore, "can do everything well. She's got a top-spin forehand that drives her opponents deep. She knows the game and uses the court well." The team's No. 2 singles player is Katy Moran, a sophomore who is dividing her time between tennis and volleyball this season. Moran is "a great athlete," according to Vance. "She's a little newer to tennis than Mahon. Her ground strokes are her strength." . . U -. jr - " ' . .MBy"t . "".'! , . &i5t5. r: .iii, " ' 'i .. . ,' :, I I i " '. . At No. 3 singles is Katie Wasilewski. A ski racer during winter, Wasilewski brings some of the aggressiveness of a downhiller to her tennis matches. "She's an excellent competitor," says Vance. "Sometimes at this age if you have a lot of experience in competition and can stay cool through the points you will end up being the winner." Two seniors-Brooke Coleman and Babbie McComb-form the Miners' No. 1 doubles team. Coleman and McComb have played Introducing the all-new 1993 Audi 90 Series IN STOCK NOW! Carrie Bettis and Rebekah Rogers round out the team's starting line-up, at No. 2 doubles. The two are the defending state champions at No. 1 doubles. Rogers is "a rock-solid player," according to Vance. Bettis has a strong all-around all-around game. Park City traveled to Grantsville for a match Sept. 14. They play Uintah at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Park City Racquet Club, then take on Lehi Sept. 23 at the Racquet Club. The team is already gearing up for the state championships Oct. 3 at B YU. Vance says the team has a good chance of becoming state champs for a fourth consecutive time. "I really hope we'll win," she says. "I don't want to be overconfident but if you were a betting man I think the odds would be for us." i 0, . . - -' .
