Show -4 Growth, accreditation, building highlight year new for UBATC Submitted by Paul Hacking, President of Uintah Basin Applied Technology College As President of the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College, let me express my sincere appreciation to the faculty and staff of UBATC for their commitment to their students and to our many industry partners. The quality of UBATC programs is directly related to the passion,- knowledge, skills and dedication of our instructors. We are fortunate to have them as team members as well as the many support staff who play vital roles in our educational educa-tional programs. This past year has been a very successful suc-cessful one for the Uintah Basin Applied Ap-plied Technology College. Not only did we become accredited as a Technical College, but we grew significantly overall over-all in both our secondary and adult pro grams. Last year our membership hour growth was 8.6 percent. We served over 5,300 individuals in the Basin. Both of these numbers are the highest UBATC has seen for several years. So far this year we are 8.5 percent higher than we were at this same time last year. The astounding part of our growth is that we doing it during a booming economy where jobs are plentiful. I attribute our success to our faculty and staff who have gone the extra mile this past year to reach our strategic plan goals and strengthen our relationships with industry. Partnering with industry is a primary focus of UBATC, especially during this economic surge. We are having more people come in for training who are already employed but are seeking to upgrade their skills for their own benefit ben-efit or at the request of their employer. We have seen this especially in our Petroleum Energy and Transportation Western Petroleum, Inc. We were also successful with our partnerships with the local school districts. We saw a 25 percent increase in the enrollment of Uintah High students and a 3.2 percent increase in the number of Union High students, where we have enjoyed solid student enrollments for years. We are pleased that this growth comes at a time when we are getting ready to build a new campus in Vernal. The additional space will be vital in continuing our growth potential. We had our groundbreaking on Thursday, April 12. Our new college facilities will be finished early in July 2008. Big-D is the contractor and will be working in association with the architect, Mr. Stephen Ehninger with Harris & Associates. The building will allow us to expand our presence in the Vernal area and offer our existing programs in a more professional environment. USU Uintah Basin is a full partner with us in this project and we will share many multiple-use areas. I am extremely grateful to the Uintah County commissioners commission-ers who have demonstrated incredible vision and leadership in their support for our new facility. Without them, this building would not be happening. We expect the UBATC-USU building in Vernal, and the programs offered to have profound impact in the lives of the citizens of the Basin for years to - M Paul Hacking come. Our new facility allows us to add two new programs - a complete Diesel Technology Program as well as Culinary Arts. We will also focus on meeting the technical training needs of business and industry with an emphasis empha-sis on the energy industry. As I look to the future, UBATC is committed to increasing the quality of our programs, attracting and retaining students, celebrating student success and building industry partnerships. As we do this, UBATC will play an important impor-tant role in the economic development of the community and the lives of its citizens.
