Show r Collaborative environmental conservation in the Uintah Basin Vernal Express Express Writer Twelve distinct entities, including federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as private landowners and businesses, have come together with USU Logan to build a conservation con-servation plan for sage grouse management. "Their goal is to help prevent the need for the federal listing of sage grouse, if their populations decline as they have elsewhere in the west," said USU biologist Sarah Lupis. . UBARM, the acronym for the Uintah Basin Adaptive Resource Management working group, is developing a sage grouse conservation con-servation plan in the Uintah Basin. Lupis explains, "The concept helps to maintain local control over land management issues by involving stakeholders in the process." Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett counties have been eh-gaged eh-gaged with UBARM beginning at the research level. Starting in 2004, UBARM research biologists identified the "needs, threats, and strategies for sustainable sage grouse populations popu-lations in the Uintah Basin," says Lupis. In general, the counties of northeastern Utah maintain successful flocks as much of their preferred habitat is maintained in the farm and ranch lands of this region. However, Lupis cautions cau-tions that the changes in traditional tradi-tional land use have contributed to a commensurate change in the threat assessment of sage grouse habitat. Threats to the sustainability of the Basin's flocks are associated associ-ated with conditions directly related to disturbance in sage grouse nesting or feeding habitats. habi-tats. "UBARM took into consideration impacts from economic development develop-ment in the sage grouse habitat to propose alternatives for conservation," con-servation," said Lupis. The combined efforts of stakeholders stake-holders acted to conserve bird populations in three areas, on the East Bench, in the Anthro Mountain area, and in the Ashley National Forest. Two of three locations concern the effects of oilgas developmentand the third addresses the effects of forest fire on nesting birds. "Northeastern Utah," according accord-ing to Lupis, "sustains the 4th largest sage grouse population in the state, something we wish to maintain." "These partnerships serve to empower community values and economics," says Lupis, and too, acts purposefully to avoid placing plac-ing the sage grouse on the List of Endangered Species. April 23 - 27 is Local Government Week Monday, April 23 through Friday, April 27, 2007 is Local Lo-cal Government Week. Uintah County residents take this time to acknowledge the efforts of local lo-cal government in contribution to the well being of the populous. Monday's regular meeting of the board ofUintah County Commissioners Commis-sioners took a moment to honor department workers across the county. Each commissioner identified iden-tified and described several of the county's many departments for acknowledgement. Commissioner Darlene Burns, recognized the "work of the justice jus-tice court in dealing with class B and C misdemeanors, violations of ordinances, small claims, and too, the county attorney's office for their prosecution of felonies felo-nies and certain misdemeanors committed in Uintah County, including criminal proceedings in Juvenile Court." She went on to acknowledge the work of the library for their special historical histori-cal and educational programs in service to the county. Commissioner David Haslem took special notice the roads department for their efforts in "safety, signage and surfacing of nearly 16,000 miles of roads in Uintah County." Haslem went on to recognize facilities management manage-ment for their care of the buildings build-ings and grounds of several of the county's entities and the USU extension for their educational programs, services, and publications publica-tions in service tohe community. Haslem closed by acknowledging the commissioner's office staff in proud, support of their efforts. Commissioner Mike McKee recognized the "effective performance per-formance of the county's human resources department in their administration of the policies and procedures for the benefit of the county's employees." McKee went on to acknowledge the tireless tire-less efforts of others, praising "workers who often remain at their jobs well into the evening to finish the county's work." i Ah! This is the life! At least it was much better in the afternoon sun rather than the early morning frost which accompanied their births last Thursday. These lambs are located on the property where the new USUUBATC building will be constructed across from the high school. Hansen explained that there are over 1000 pots plus 200 Bloom Master boxes that will be planted this year for the city. This year the city will spend over $40,000 on their flower programs that have been recognized by tourists from across the world as they visit the area. r . m0 IS&z-lY II ' V The growing season has begun at Basin Nursery and Garden Center. Thousands of seeds have already been placed in potting soil and tags are in place to let the consumers know what they are purchasing. Even with the cold weather and the tradition of freezing weather in May, people have been purchasing flowers to be planted around their yards. Mother's Day seems to be the big push for people to come in and start their spring planting.
