The Sterling Scholar competition competi-tion has been honoring Utah's top high school seniors for 42 years, since its creation by former for-mer Deseret News education editor Lavor K. Chaffin. Chaffin wanted to recognize and encourage encour-age students who excel both scholastically, and as leaders in their communities. Reaching the regional competition com-petition alone is considered a great honor, and requires a tremendous amount of effort on the students' behalf to create portfolios of their work. At the regional level, each student's 20-page portfolio is reviewed by three judges in their respective category. The students are then interviewed for 15 minutes about their work in the classroom and their community. com-munity. Some of the categories, like music and dance, include a performance component. Winners in each category are awarded $500, with the runners-up runners-up collectinga $300 award. Those named as Sterling Scholars at the regional level are eligible for scholarships at all of Utah's public pub-lic universities. The scholarship amounts varying from school to school. Some schools also offer scholarships to any student who qualifies for the regional competition. Uintah High School Winners Fourteen basin seniors were awarded Sterling Scholar honors this year.
