Show B4 Wednesday, April 25, 2007 Vernal Express THE CHILDREN'S PLACE By: Jennifer Petty V 1 "v ' J i Did you know that monkeys, apes and humans are all related? Scientists group all of them together in a group called primates. Being a primate means having forward-facing eyes and highly flexible arms, legs and fingers. Even though we have some things in common, monkeys, apes and humans are different. Do you know how to tell the difference between a monkey and an ape? The easiest way to tell monkeys apart from apes is to look for a tail. Apes don't have tails. Also, monkeys don't usually swing in branches, but instead run along the tops of branches. Apes include gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. Apes are a lot more like humans than monkeys are. Apes have a body that is more similar to humans. They also have a higher level of intelligence, or in other words, they are smarter, than monkeys. Scientists have even been able to teach gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans sign language. Humans (which scientists call hominids) differ from apes mostly in the way they move and their ability to think. Apes usually use their legs and arms to move from place to place while you use mostly your legs. Your arms and legs are called your limbs. Using four limbs to move is called quadrupedal walking while using two limbs is called bipedal walking. Humans also have a more advanced ability to reason and think. Each type, or species of monkey and ape, has unique characteristics. Monkeys are divided into two groups: New World Monkeys and Old World Monkeys. The biggest factor used to determine if a monkey is an Old World Monkey or New World Monkey is the flatness of their nose. New World Monkeys have flatter noses than Old World Monkeys. Also, most New World Monkeys have long tails they use to grasp things. Some of the most common New World Monkey species include: Marmosets, Tamarins, Squirrel Monkeys, Capuchins, and Spider Monkeys. Some of the most common Old World Monkey species include: Macaques, Mandrills, Guenons, Mangabeys, Baboons, and Proboscis Monkeys. See if you can find out more about these specific types of monkeys from a book at the library or on the Internet. g - o 0 Orangutans usually live by themselves unless they are raising a baby. 97 percent of a chimpanzee's chim-panzee's DNA is the same as a human's DNA. Squirrel monkeys live in large groups of about 300 monkeys. I Mandrills have bright red and blue faces. Gorillas can weigh 400 pounds. The great apes You probably know a little more about apes then you do about monkeys. The three main species of apes are gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. These are all "great apes" meaning they are the biggest apes. Gorillas are the largest of the apes, but are very shy. They live in Africa, and although they are often shown as being aggressive in movies, in the wild they are peaceful and quiet. Each gorilla's nose makes a unique print (like our fingerprints). Adult male gorillas are called silverbacks because when they are about 12-years-old, a patch of hair on their backs turns silver-colored. Adult male gorillas are almost double the weight of an adult female fe-male gorilla and can weigh about 400 pounds. Gorillas eat mostly plants and rarely have to drink water. An adult male eats about 50 pounds of food each day! Chimpanzees are the closest relative to humans. They are very smart. Chimpanzees also live in Africa. Chimpanzees are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and meat. They live in groups of about 40-60. Chimpanzees usually have one baby at a time and young chimps stay with their mothers for about seven years. Orangutans live on two different differ-ent islands in Southeast Asia. They live mostly in trees and are covered with long reddish-brown hair. While gorillas are the largest of the apes, orangutans are the second largest ape and are about two-thirds the size of a gorilla. Orangutans eat mostly plants and fruit, but sometimes eat insects and birds. Unlike gorillas and chimpanzees, orangutans live by themselves except when a mother has a baby. Then the baby stays with the mother for about seven years. Orangutans are an endangered species. Some scientists say they may be extinct within the next six years. They are endangered because their habitat has been destroyed because of logging, mining, and development. mm w ...
