Some Davis County gas stations have charged as much as $1.27 per gallon since that time, a considerable increase over the average of $1.05 before the invasion. inva-sion. This increase has left some residents wondering if the price hike is justified, in spite of the fact that oil company officials claim it is necessary. In a recent UPI story, Charles DiBona, president of the oil industry's in-dustry's American Petroleum Institute, In-stitute, said, "There has been tremendous restraint," on the part of oil companies in pricing gasoline as crude prices skyrocketed in the wake of the Iraqi invasion. County residents disagree. We - asked people to respond to the question, ques-tion, "Is the increase in the cost of gasoline necessary, and has it changed your driving habits? Terrie Peterson said it has not changed her driving habits, "but it has changed where I buy gas. It seems to me the price is inflated and we are no longer buying gas at our regular station because the cost is too high," she said. "We just got back from a trip to Yellowstone, and the price of gas there was $1.50 so it could be worse," said Jeff Woodhave. He said although they took the planned vacation, they "did not travel around as much when we got there. Woodhave said he has not had to switch gas stations. "My station has always had the lowest price around," he said. Pam Youngs said her husband and friends have thought the price increase is unjustified. "I know at Maverik it's $1.15 a gallon, while at 7-11 it's $1.25. There seems to be no reason for the discrepancy. It. seems some stations are trying to , maintain a price and others are going go-ing up. That makes me wonder if the price increase is really RICK DEAN ' Back East it is $1 .46 a gallon. Rick Dean said he feels there is a "slight justification for the increase. in-crease. A little, but not much," he said. "I heard the oil from Iraq is not really affecting us so I'm not sure it should be increased." Dean said he has not changed his driving habits due to the price increase, but that might change. "My sister lives back East, and she said the gas there is $1.46. If that hits here it will hurt us," he said. VICKIE TWEDE "I spent $17 for a fill-up." necessary," she said. Vickie Twede agreed. "I don't agree with raising prices," she said. "From what I've heard it's not necessary. I spent $17 to fill up my car today, and it usually costs me $13. This is ridiculous," she said. "I'm not changing my driving habits because I have to drive for my business," said Richard Barton. Bar-ton. He added that he had just returned re-turned from St. George and that gasoline prices there are $1.32 per gallon. "It was nice to get home and only pay $1.19," he said.
