Show Students leorn live politics Georgetown program. The Junior Statesmen Foundation is a nonprofit, non-profit, non-partisan organization that supports The Junior Statesmen of America, a student-run organization organiza-tion that promotes the political education edu-cation and political involvement of high school students. John Harrison of Viewmont High School recently attended The Junior Statesmen Summer School at Georgetown University. The rigorous academic program included an intensive Speakers Program Pro-gram with many of the newsmakers in the nation's capital, a challenging course in American Government, and a thought-provoking series of Congressional Workshop debate sessions. The Congressional Workshop sessions were the equivalent of a student-run legislature. Students chose resolutions and a chairperson and debated one another under the rules of parliamentary procedure. Issues included abortion rights, aid to Soviet republics seeking independence, in-dependence, pesticide use, banning handguns, euthanasia, and U.S. policy towards the PLO. At the conclusion of each debate, students voted on whether to pass, amend, or defeat the resolution. In total, 230 outstanding students from 40 states attended the |
